Can anyone who has direct experience with the Chemistry Dept as a major or minor share their experience? Thanks.

The Chemistry dept is world class…the new gorgeous science building and labs are named for Furman’s Nobel Prize winner studied physics. Chemistry is a very challenging major with great outcomes for those who can handle it. I know a young woman on a full ride to Chapel Hill in MD/MPH now who was a great Chem major…and a classmate of mine is teaching at a top liberal arts college after his chem degree at Furman and further degrees from Univ of Chicago and from Stanford.

Furman has excellent graduate school admissions and the faculty knows each student well and will champion those who stand out and work hard when it is time for reference letters. There are also many opportunities to stay in the summers to do hard science research and to work towards publications and formal presentations at national conferences. The Clinical Psych dept is also world class and produces many PhDs. A Bio major I know is knocking it out well in a fine dental school now…really…for those with talent in sciences, you will find Furman will back you 100% and that the Dept of Chemistry has a reputation that follows your graduate school applications.

Thank you very much, Faline2, for your first-hand accounts. We’ve read about the great reputation the department has, but it’s always good to hear from someone who knows!
