Chemistry Olympiad 2015

I actually didn’t think the lab was that bad. I got most of the first question, and got all of the second one, though my work wasn’t very neat. The whole process for me was kind of haphazard.
Really did not like the frq. I failed the first and last questions
MC was really gimmicky I thought. Nothing stupid, but some questions you just had to know.

Got both labs quite easily, fr was meh, struggled on the multiple choice a bit. Estimated cutoff for honors anyone?

probably 46-48 I say a little bit lower than last year?

We were allowed to keep the test booklets. I looked up most of my answers and I should score 49 - 51.
Predicted cutoffs:
Honors: 46 MC
High Honors: 50 MC + 70% FRQ
Camp: 54 MC + 80 - 85% FRQ + 90% LAB

Compared to last year, I thought that this year’s trivia was fine…last year’s questions like the aluminum existing most commonly as an oxide and the argon question were just the you have to know it type of questions. As for the lab, last years was easier? Last year was just a titration and chromatography no? almost too simple for usnco.

It was easier last yr for lab but this yrs was definitely doable

@CallMeGod: I think the National part I MC this year was much easier than last year’s, and pretty much the same difficult as the Locals this year. For some reason Locals had national level questions on it this year. In that end, I found the Nationals MC to be the same difficulty as locals…perhaps even easier in some aspects.

@MarkinovRules yeah, that’s how i felt

@MarkinovRules btw, I keep reading your name as Markovnikov rules…

tbh MCs were definitely not easier than locals (local test WAS harder than last year’s local exam but not really comparable to this year’s nationals) unless you know the areas that trivia questions were covering. I would agree that the calculation parts were relatively easier though. But the questions were requiring many thoughts unlike previous years’ questions. Also, part ii was definitely easier than 2014 and 2013. Lab was about the same as last year but I liked this year’s more since it was fun and required good planning beforehand!

MC this year was definitely easier than last year. Expecting a higher cutoff.
FRQs were okay, the orgo at the end was definitely doable, just ran out of time.
Labs were obviously harder than last year; the second lab was very straightforward, but I totally messed up the first lab.

So maybe 57+/90%/80% on each part, respectively for the camp? But I feel like there were some trivia questions that students who do not know one area (I can’t say which since the test is still going on) could have stumbled on.

I felt like the mcq was a lot more trivia based, and for me much harder than the local

so we do we think top 150 come out

3weeks from now??

Wow that is a pretty high prediction. Maybe if that what you feel u got, but I heard the avg is usually 55/85/avg/above avg. This year felt avg but the lab was one of the top 3 hardest ever. Conceptually and in practice hard. Doable but not likely done well unless u actually hace practice a lot

The top 150 will probably take a good amount of time, at least compared to camp announcement since its more of formality

Tomorrow is last day of testing! Wooh almost dOne

so if you flunk the lab, can you still make it to camp?

If you did super well. I mean, 20 percent on frq is pretty much what entire lab is worth (if you didn’t get a zero on lab). However that means you’ll have to do that much better than those going to camp. So if you got likE 95 on bothn you prob made camp without lab

haha 95%+… so hardcore

@andyis The lab was not that difficult, especially the second question. The second question didn’t take more than 20 minutes once you figured it out. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are many high scores on the lab.
I just saw someone else doing the second lab, and then realized what the answer was. I never actually did the experiment.
The first one was a bit more difficult and required an intuitive solution.

The FRQ though… Not too fun for me.
