Does it matter much for undergrad? I'm interested in medical research. I'd like to major in chemistry, but biology/biochem seems to be more common.

Biology/biochem is a more common major because math is a hurdle for some people and they are avoiding the nightmare of physical chemistry. My recomendation would be if you can handle the math, go chemistry because there is less competition for entry-level medical research positions. I did medical research in nephrology for a year, and the work was primarily chemical. They hired me and a PhD analytical chemist at the same time. It seems to me that biology in general is starting to shift more toward molecular biology and chemistry every year.
