Which has the better chemisty department? Better research opportunities?

I would think Chapel Hill would probably be best for research, just in terms of resources at your disposal (the libraries of NC State, Duke, and UNC) and number of professors. But Davidson has one heck of a chemistry department, I think. I know we're very strong on the sciences. Plus, at Davidson, they work you hard.

Is the Davidson College library the only library available to you?

No - we have access to Charlotte libraries, as well, and if we ever don't have a source you need, Davidson can place an order for the book or article and get it to you basically overnight. But I would think UNC/Duke/NC State together would probably have much more immediately available. That said, I'm not gonna knock our free inter-library loan service. It's helped several of my term papers haha

Library work isn't nearly as important for science majors; most of the important material can be found online in journal archives. :)

True - they also probably have more lab space, though. We have fine labs...a whole building for chemistry. But UNC would probably be much more spacious.

from what i've seen and heard, Davidson has very strong science programs. I wouldn't at all say that because of their size, their facilities or program are much weaker than at a program like UNC's. Of course at UNC there will be things associated with size like more class variety and such though. Davidson does seem to stress a lot of undergrad research, so that should be good too for you. but from what i've heard and seen, its not too hard to get into research if you want to at UNC CH either.
I might be having to make this decision soon too - except in philosophy lol

I would make sure that they both have great programs (which I would think they both do) and then decide more based upon which school you actually like better. I bet you'll get a great chemistry education at either school.

I was accepted early decision to Davidson for the class of 2013. The reason I visited Davidson in the first place was because they are on so many top lists for their science programs. My mom actually encouraged me to visit even though I didn't want to look at any southern schools. When I got there I went into the chemistry building because the tour guide didn't really know much about the sciences. One of the lab technicians immediately offered to give me a tour, talked to me about the classes, and answered all my questions. (I want to major in chemistry by the way.) Another reason I am excited about the science program is because, as already mentioned above, there seems to be a great opportunity for research. My teacher knows someone that goes to davidson and stays there every summer to do science research. Hope this helps.
