Hi

I just got Chicago's FA letter. But the cost of attendance stated in the letter differs from that on the website by as much as 8k. So I wonder what is the annual cost of attendance? And roughly how much do you guys spend in a year?

Thanks a lot

From what i have read in the forums it is really expensive, I think i read somewhere that U of Chicago does not give to much financial aid.

maybe on the website, they don’t factor in travel, personal expenses, books, etc., and on the FA letter, they do. only counting tuition, fees, and room & board, the cost of attendance is $50,034. However, after factoring in travel, books, etc, they estimated my college expenses to be $55,795.

from what i’ve seen, financial aid is a mixed bag. it seems that it works out worse for people who are somewhere between lower-middle-class and rich. i lucked out and got nearly a full-ride…but my family makes a little over $30,000 a year and there’s 6 people living in my house. so i don’t know what to tell you.

My son is a second year there. The U of Chicago fin aid was the best of his acceptances and no, it did not decline in the second year.

Il give you my story:

I have a 90-98 total income, my sister is a soph in college, we have limited assets and just basic stuff all around. Chicagos fin aid package for me was 32k out of 55k (this is without the 7.5k loans that they offered me), Williams was 41k out of 49-50k (no student loans). Johns Hopkins was 42k out of 55 (this is without 2.5k student loans they offered me), Im still waiting on Emory but Im sure it is gonna be better than Chicago. Chicago was my love since my junior year but due to their fin aid they have lost me. Chicago is an amazing academic institution but in regard to its peers, they suck with fin aid.

Regarding OP’s question, the website information regarding costs is probably for last year, 2008-2009. My DD’s package showed costs for 2009-2010, and you’re right the tuition, the fees and personal expenses estimate all went up. The only cost that stayed the same was room and board.

Also, don’t forget medical expenses ($2070 wow!), they can be waived if your parents have coverage for you. They will show up on your bill initially, however, as the FA office said.

“However, after factoring in travel, books, etc, they estimated my college expenses to be $55,795.”

That’s almost a 5% increase over last year. But the tuition, fees, R&B number only went up slightly from last year.

I wish the school would stop being coy, and just come out with the 2009/2010 cost of attendance.

Finally released – 4.5% increase in tuition.

[Tuition rises 4.5percent - The Chicago Maroon](<a href=“Delays keep Proof from silver screen – Chicago Maroon”>Delays keep Proof from silver screen – Chicago Maroon)

where are the meals included? or is that separate?

That figure is just tuition. However, the article states that tuition/R&B are remaining the same.

Anyone on campus know what the new required meal plan will cost for '12 students who can’t grandfather into the minimum/moderate plans?
