Chicago Unifieds 2016 Question

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows what schools will be accepting walk ins. I was also curious if there is a list somewhere that has all of the schools attending the Chicago Unifieds. I have seen the website with the official unifieds schools but I would like to know what other schools will also be attending.

Walk-ins last year:

List of all schools at Palmer House last year:

There are more schools attending than those shown in the list above that are held at other hotels, studios, and schools in Chicago.

I’d love to hear about any schools that people know of that will hold auditions in Chicago during the Chicago Unifieds, but at other hotels or studios.

We just realized we will travel to Chicago Unifieds (from NJ, very near NYC) so my daughter can audition for Butler University. (Butler is not a BFA, but rather a Theater BA with audition, and they are at Chicago Unifieds only, for the first time this year.) The audition will be relatively short and it is a long way to go for one audition. My DD will audition at DePaul while we are there, but I’m curious if we could try to manage other auditions while there in order to maximize our investment in hotel and airfare.

Thanks for any info you may have to share!

@LuvsLabs, the best thing to do is check for the audition locations and dates for the schools on your daughter’s list to see who will be in Chicago during or a day or two before unifieds week.

@LuvsLabs many many schools go to Chiacgo. Agree with above to check the schools you are interested in to see specifics. But you should be able to fit more in. Do you have schools you are specifically thinking about?

Boston U - planning to audition on campus (not at Unifieds, so will also do Emerson during this trip.)

Emerson - Planning to audition on campus (although they are at Unifieds)

DePaul - will audition on campus, while at Chicago Unifieds for Butler.

Marymount Manhattan - will audition on campus - (lready acceptd to the college with a nice scholarship offer, since they have rolling admissions. Still have to audition to the BFA Acting program.)

Muhlenberg - not required, but “strongly recommended” - will do on campus

U-Arts - So far, planning to audition on campus

UMinn/Guthrie - Probably will audition at NYC Unifieds

CMU - Probably will audition during NYC Unifieds

UMich - planning to audition on campus (they strongly recommend auditioning in Ann Arbor)

Rutgers Mason Gross - planning to audition (they are at the Crowne Plaza 1/22 & 22 and at Ripley Grier Studio in NYC 1/26-29

Syracuse - plan to audition on campus (DD will stay with a current student from her high school) FYI, Syracuse will audition in NYC 1/21 & 22.

Non-audition schools:
Bard
Connecticut College
Northwestern University
Skidmore

OK, I just realied that BU is offering auditions during Chicago Unifieds at the Hyatt Regency, Feb. 5-8. I have to speak with my DD to see if she would prefer to audition on campus or skip the long drive to Boston and do BU in Chicago and change Emerson to NYC Unfieds…

(I should mention that my DD is hoping for BFA Acting - not MT. Sorry, I just realized this thread is an MT thread, so all my sharing may not be relevant for many readers.)

@LuvsLabs - I was just going to comment that BU was at Chicago unifieds in 2014, my D her audition there

And my D is a BFA acting student. (she auditioned for both MT and Acting at a variety of schools, was accepted in both types, just chose acting as final destination) Lots of us with bop back and forth between the MT and Acting forums- there are many similarities. But feel free to come over to the other as well

@toowonderful - where did your daughter land? Is she at BU!? The BFA process is really stressful and she hasn’t done a single audition yet! So much work and prep. and travel, and such incredible odds to get into a BFA program! I just had a mini panic attack themed, “what if she is aiming too high and doesn’t get in any of these schools - arrhhhhh!”

@LuvsLabs - she is at NYU (well, actually right now she is at RADA - she is doing a semester abroad) which she absolutely loves. I totally get the panic attack part - I must have had 100 of them through the process. It’s one of the hardest things I have ever done as a parent… letting her risk that really big fail. And of course - college isn’t the end of that possibility…

@LuvsLabs many (most) of the schools you mentioned will be in Chiacgo CMU actually is in NYC the weekend after NYC Unifieds this year so doing CMU in Chicago may be helpful. Michigan, U arts, guthrie and maybe Syracuse and Rutgers are all in Chiacgo

Emerson should be at Chicago too

Love hearing everyone is is stressed like me! My d wants BFA in mt yesterday we toured temple my d passed the prescreen loved the program! Today we Audition at Muhlenberg fingers crossed! We have applied at Emerson Michigan CCM Hart SU Ithica so far sent it all prescreens! We are going to Chicago too! So far have appointments with Temple and CCM we have 8 more schools to apply to! I am pulling my hair out with all the work that goes into this process .

@lincoln56 BAL to your D! Would love to hear about how the audition goes.

@lincoln56 muhlenberg is only audition for scholarship right? Not admission…

Yes just for schorship my D was not thrilled with there program and the size of the school. We now know she wants an audition base BFA at a university. We saw there musical it was good but they only put on one musical a year!

Hi - thought I’d update this old thread a bit now that I’ve been thoroughly schooled!

I have a wet-erase 60 day calendar in front of me right now with my daughter’s mid-term exams and all the remaining 10 auditions she has left, and which are finally all scheduled for Jan & Feb.

The good news is she’s fully accepted to the Acting BFA at UArts, so we know she will be in a BFA program. (Trying to forget about the wasted $ in application/audition/test score fees to the BA schools - wish I’d been just that much more organized months ago! Oh well.)

She has mid-term exams the week of Jan 16th, so she is only doing two schools the following weekend. We live in NJ and will drive to New Brunswick so she can audition for Rutgers Mason Gross School and hopefully get a nice feel for the school by being on campus. She will audition for the UMinn Guthrie Program the following day in NYC, which is an easy commute for us. (They are at Nola Studios, not technically part of NYC Unifieds.)

The following weekend she will audition in NYC on campus at Marymount Manhattan.

We’re flying to Ann Arbor on 2/3 so she can audition at UMich. on campus (call me crazy, but their website said “We strongly recommend auditioning or interviewing in Ann Arbor.” https://www.music.umich.edu/prospective_students/admissions/ug/auditions.htm
so I thought showing that level of interest over just auditioning at Chicago Unifieds would mean something.)

We then will fly to Chicago for Unifieds and she will audition for Boston U, Butler U, DePaul (on campus) and Emerson College.

Next, she’ll audition on campus for Syracuse U audition.

Then, since we’ve never been to Pittsburgh and she really should see the campus of her #1 choice BFA program, she will audition at Carnegie Mellon U. for her final audition.

I’m sure we could have worked more into the Chicago Unifieds, but less stress coupled with the chance to see these schools in person were big factors in the crazy travel schedule we have ended up with. Hopefully she has some choices to make, including the schools we are traveling to so it was worth the investment.

@LuvsLabs congrats on U Arts.
