China has responded to the election of Donald Trump by warning the president-elect that should he start a trade war with China, one the retaliatory moves would be to cease sending students from the People’s Republic of China to American colleges and universities, a significant source of funds for some schools.
Our son is currently taking a Chinese History course. There are two Chinese nationals in his class. He reports that they have been stunned to learn things (and see video) of events in China that the government has hidden from its people. Is it in the U.S. interest to have these Chinese students study and live with Americans? Most of these students are full-pay: Do American universities “need” these funds? Would it be easier for American kids to gain admission to many of the most-select universities if China halts the flow of Chinese students to America?
Well maybe colleges should stop counting on foreign money to drive profits and manage their financial pricing models differently.
You know, good luck with that, China.
They can try but people are going to be pretty sad in China about this. Besides, where would the Chinese elite government officials/ business owners (they are all tied together) going to send their posh kids? Britain, but there’s not enough room there. Canada? Not sure it there’s enough room their either. Greenland? You know, where?
I’m nt supporting trade war with china but china really can’t do too much here imho. They need the usa a lot. A lot a lot a lot. Like, the USA complains about how china is stealing this and that, but China really needs us markets. Or they face serious economic downturn and serious unrest.
I am from China and I think it is impossible. More than 300,000 Chinese students come to America for education each year. The number is even increasing tremendously each year. Sure, government does hide things from us but it is impossible for them to stop Chinese students from going to America.
