Chinese 1: Placement Test Required?

I’m currently enrolled in Chinese 1 and was wondering if the placement test is really “required.” I saw on the ALC website that you will need to take it if you’ve had a background in Chinese. But I only speak some Cantonese at home, I can barely read any characters, and I can’t even write at all. I also saw in some old posts that people were able to take Chinese 1 without taking the placement exam at all. I know this question was asked before, but the answers I found were at least 5 years old. So, is it still currently possible to take Chinese 1 without taking the exam, since I know I will probably bomb it anyways?

Thanks!

You don’t need to take placement exam for any language 1 class.

I was just sort of unsure because the ALC website states that if you have a background, “i.e. living in a Chinese family,” then you would need to take it…and I happen to be Chinese. It’s just that I’m not fluent in Mandarin at all or in reading/writing Chinese characters.
