hey guys..im an incoming transfer student...and i guess i need to take a language even though i took 3 years in high school...first off has anyone taken chinese or spanish and can recommend a proff? and second off...i was reffered to bruinwalk by a friend...is this site a good site review for professors? thanks!

If you did 3 years in high school and have retained some of the knowledge, I suggest you try your luck at the placement test. Refer to the respective department’s website regarding their placement tests.

And yes, Bruinwalk is as good as it gets, but you still have to take the advice on there with a grain of salt.

im in the same boat.

I’m a white boy but think learning Chinese would be good for the future considering how China is so dominant.

Should i learn Chinese inside of school where ill get graded, or on my own for fun?

yea im half white half chinese…i can speak and understand chinese perfectly fine…but i cant write or read for ****!! its so hard…my three years of chinese in hs were pretty much BS…if you dont know ANY chinese…i wouldnt advise taking it…its a hard language to learn let alone read and write it…and im FLUENT in speaking…unless you are really devoted to studying 15+ hours a week for it. In my opinion of course…

I think if you speak it fluently, it’s just a matter of memorizing how to write each word and its pronunciation. If you’re a new learner, it can be brutally difficult. It’s a language unlike your European language. The Romantic, Germanic, and maybe even Slavic languages are somewhat related to each other and share some similarity, but East Asian languages are very different in syntax, morphology, and other linguistic aspects compared to their Caucasian counterparts.
