yy0712, unless you want to major in cornell's hotel management stuff, do consider UT honors+full scholarship, nowadays it's harder and harder getting full scholarship, you are the one out of hundreds candidates awarded with the scholarship, value it highly

just my little advice, if you want one from me

Hey alexli, can you tell us something about your ec's??

Nothing significant. Some work as a leader in the student body, some interests in reading, sports, chorus, etc.

I hope I will get accpted, Ive almost the same stats as you, not impressive EC's, but I think good essays and recs

thanks, sweetbee and tangsdaily.
Yeah, i think the fact that i live in texas probably helped. But anyway, i haven't even recieved my financial aid package, and scholarship offers come out in june/july. But still, unless i get off some waitlists, i'm going to ut.

Are you serious yy0712?? Scholarship offers come out that late? Oh well......but did you get a full tuition scholarship like tangsdaily said?? If so, congratulations!

Hey Alex Li, nice to meet you. I'm very impressed by your Cornell offer. It seems like Chinese applicants have conquered every single top school in America this year. What do you plan to study at Cornell? Anyway, I'm originally from Beijing, and I'll be going to Vassar this fall most probably. Do you use MSN? Maybe we can talk online. Oh, and my e-mail is in the profile.

oh nono, that's why i was saying that scholarship offers haven't come out yet. I think tangsdaily mistook deans scholars for a scholarship (Geez, i wish!) yeah, i do hope for some scholarships, but i don't want to expect too much just yet.

Hi, Sweetbee.I'd like to talk to you if we the chance to meet online. However, you might know I can not have a easy access to the internet, since I am living on-campus, now, in China.
Here is my MSN, You can get in touch with me easily after June. Then I will be at home.

hey guys, i am currently living in Shanghai. However, I have been accepted as a junior student in a US highschool and will start my journey there this fall. I am thinking of applying colleges too, though i may still have two years to prepare for that. Does anyone have good suggestions on that? And if anyone has had experience in US highschools, please tell me a little bit about the studies and lifes there. Thank u.

ZTT, If you are from Shanghai Foreign Language School, US highschool life will be pretty easy for you; and your chance for top schools whether liberal arts college or comprehensive research university. Ask bowtoserenity if you want, but not conquerserenity.... hahahha

no. i am from Shanghai No.3 Girls' Highschool.

Hi Alex. I'll add you to my list...hehe I'm currently using a computer at the Vassar library right now. After almost 3 days of staying on Vassar's campus, I am now absolutely certain that this is where I want to be for the next 4 years...so, I'll definitely going to Vassar!

Dear Helpful CCers,

I am supposed to be studying rigorously in my room for my 10 dreaded APs, but instead I cannot focus because it is just too overwhelming and I decided to do something productive at least in nature. To make a long story short, I need some advice. I understand it is difficult to apply to college from China, especially as an International student, but enlighten me with the procedures of the process. My cousin will start high school next year, so I think of her right now as a "clean board", waiting for me to write on. She wants to come here for college to join me, (I'm going to Wellesley next year) and since she hasn't started high school yet, I think she has a decent chance at any college if I guide her right. I am thinking of HYPSMs as basics, then top LACs (Williams, Swarthmore, Wellesley... ) in case she doesn't get in, then publics for backup (Berkley, UMich, NYU).

My primary concern is academics. What are some usual academic procedures for International students? She lives in Xi'an, so it might be harder as compared to a Beijing student. Also, I have only heard of IBs and A levels but have no clue what they are. I can help her prepare for the SATs and essays, and guide her on what kind of extracurriculars, but I am clueless on how the grades transfer. I'm pretty sure they don't have GPAs. I always thought that there was no such thing as "progress grades" in China and the only thing that mattered was the "college entrance exam". How do Internationals get accepted at US colleges?

this sucks...it seems that everyone got in some prestigious school except for me...

what are you talking about? don't forget about me ;)

I came from Beijing but attent middle school in Xi'an. The middle school I went was one of the best ones in the city.I assume your cousin is also in a prestigious school,in this case, the pressure of maintaining good grades and prepareing for all kinds of tests takes away all leisures she has.
First, tell your cousin to try her best to learn English, communication and writting skills are most important, I believe there are a bunch of excellent Asian students who can aim a perfect SAT score but speak poor English. Second, tell her to do something unique, don't let her become the second Liu Yiting, she needs to contribute her ability to the society.Last, don't be so ambitious, I had never heard any high school students in Xi'an got into HYP, the best so far was a guy from Gaoxin High School got into Columbia two years ago. If your cousin can win some international level trophies and awards, she will probably have a shot. She has to take both TOELF and the SATs,but it is hard to looking for a preparation course in Xi'an.Good recommendation letters from someone in US and study aboard can also make a difference. Good luck.
