Chinese Thread

oh yeah...happy b-day yy0712!! if it is your b-day lol

happy b-day to the thread's first poster!! she's done a lot to take us this far .... :D:>

happy, happy, yy0712,

and in response to your call for the movies

and keep this thread afloat and interesting, (and as i selfishly am in desperate search for good movies to watch in the summer as well....Netflix)

Let's talk about our favorite movies:

I will begin with:

** Amelie (Fabuleux destin d'Am

Ohh.. happy birthday yy0712!!! I just came back from orientation at Berkeley. It was veyr cool :) .

:)
so i just got home from 4 days of orientation in austin, about to drop dead on the floor any minute…but i still wanted to spend like a minute online to quickly check emails and of course, our beloved ‘chinese thread.’ and GOSH, i'm so completely wide awake now… i really wasn’t expecting this! thanks you guys--you've just made my day :) and yes, how did you know i'm a 'she'...jeez, don't i sound manly enough?! lol.

yes, i didn’t even realize myself (since i’ve sorta stopped celebrating my b-days years ago) until just yesterday when my parents suggested that i should take some friends out for dinner this year, since it's my 18th one and all…

but thank you all again! although i've done nothing to deserve all this special attention. we should really instead thank all those loyal posters who have brought so many awesome topics here for discussion. and sorry about the nerdy way i started this thread... i never expected it to transcend into such an enduring source of humor/information/support/joy/friendship/...

but anyway, i can't thank you all enough. let's be sure to stay in touch wherever we go!

and yes, amen, chinese thread ;)

do we have a list of everyone so far?

YES,CHINESE THREAD 万岁!lol...
you guys already had your orientation?? darn,i'm not having mine until august 17.
oh yeah, how did you start the thread yy0712? i'm just too lazy to check...
ok about movies. bowtoserenity, i'm embarassed to post my favorite movies. it's all so trivial compared to yours! i know i'm a loser, i love chick flicks. still...i'm gonna post so bear with me.
hmmm...i just realized i don't know how to put my words in bold. i am a true blue loser.
LOVE ACTUALLY
it's the sweetest xmas movie! i love hugh grant even though he's old and playboyish...

SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
i just like the music in the movie. maroon 5 rocks! and keanu reeves is a plus too hehe.

INITIAL D头文字D
need i say more?? jay chou's in the movie for god's sake, plus two other very cute guys, 余文乐AND陈冠西。sigh....the special effects are quite good too.

CHOCOLAT
it has chocolates, french, johnny depp, and the typical good vs evil plus happy ending.

zhang yi mou is GOOD...

hmmm...i can't think of anymore as of now. will tell you guys more.

speaking of movies, nowadays, many new foreign movies, usually featured at non-american movie festivals, are catching up hollywood flix.
if you have a netflix account, you will have a good access to great foreign films. netflix does a better job updating new foreign movies than blockbuster
foreign films present their world view in a strikingly different way. being in america for years, hollywood movies filled everywhere, most of them repeatedly presenting similar things.
here are some bizzare recommendations,
Shanghai beach, (上海滩,1980 周润发,吕良伟 版本)
A Better Tomorrow I,II,
Swordsman I,II (笑傲江湖 1, 笑傲江湖 之 东方不败)
the bike of the 17 year old (17岁单车)
Cell Phone(手机)
杀手壕, don't know english title, a classic Jackie Chan movie.
Chinese Connection,
Fist of Legend,
The Big Boss,
the Game of Death, only worth watching the last three fight scenes by actual Bruce Lee
Scent of A Woman, Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnel
The Professional,
The Taxi Driver, Robert de Niro

yy0712, "birthday girl"! woo..... hm, envying you for taking the laurel of the founder.... haha, but... I am the first poster to bump the thread (2nd poster! yeah! changed my ID from penumbra :p).....

ali_liu, I believe I compiled one chinese list quite a while ago(like page 17 or so? not sure....it takes some effort to list everyone again since our # of members have been growing exponentially :D )

** Vanilaice **, thanks for your movie list, to make the characters bold, just type [ b ] and /b without the spaces between b and the parenthesis. And Love Actually is actually on my Netflix Queue of the movies to be rented. You fanned up my expectation...hmm....

"唐"山大兄....If you like Al Pacino's movie, you should probably also check out Dog Day Afternoon.

And I missed one of also my favorites:
Life is Beautiful (Vita

the few top ones i can remember off the top of my head...
1. pirates from the Caribbean (this is the probably one of my favorites. but then again, i haven't seen many to begin with)
2. all the harry potters (i'm not a huge fan and haven't read any of the books, but nearly everyone i know are really into them. so)
3. all the lord of the rings (very confusing at first but still quite enjoyable afterwards. i've seen the first one twice. the first time i fell asleep in the theater, but the second time was quite enjoyable with a friend doing all the explanations)
4. the count of monte cristo (i vaguely remember all the details, but i think the book is much better)
5. phantom of the opera (i really liked it. but i heard the Broadway version's way better. i've gotten all the soundtracks afterwards. and overall i really enjoyed the performance)

i know, i'm so cultural-deprived. but i am working hard to get some good movies this summer, esp the chinese ones. alright, that's all i have now...will update later.

This is very important,i think.
I'm a newcomer.At first,i introduce myself.
From Hangzhou(Currently in China),studying in Zhejiang University

Harvard is my dream.
I'm studying hard...
Hello everyone!

welcome, all the newcomers :)

DelphiXon- it's certainly nice to see somebody from Cal. fayetti is going there next year as well. :) A lot of us now have just been through the "painful" admission process. We are sticking around for the friendly community and helping the '10 or '11-ers (well, partially also because we are bored in the summer). Welcome to the community.

van, Zhejing University is certainly a first class university in China. Do you plan to come to Harvard for graudate school or to be tainted with the undergraduate crimson? Welcome, anyway. Hard work always pays off.

yy0712, how about Netflix? It's cheap and has a relatively broad selection of foreign movies. You can also change your address easily once you go to school in the fall.... heh, do i sound like a sales person or something?hmmm....

Movies! I only watched 3 movies recently: Madagascar (highly recommend, hilarious...), Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Batman Begins.
Yeah...similar to yy0712, I only watched a few movies these years...I like A Beautiful Mind, Phantom of the Opera, LOTR trilogy, Harry Potter, etc...Speaking of Chinese movies, I've watched 手机, 十面埋伏, 心急吃不了热豆腐 in the past few months. Since I am so behind on the movies (haven't even watched many of the classic Chinese ones), I plan to buy some DVD's in China this summer. :)

Vanillaice, you watched 头文字D? How was it? I know that movie has so many stars in it.... Combined with the car-racing scenes, it sounds quite exciting.

And welcome to the new members....another round of the admissions process will begin soon. Good luck to y'all!

P.S.: anyone will be in Beijing around 7/20-mid august? I'll be there..so if any of you wanna hang out, just tell me :D

i just got 头文字D.... i thought it was really bad lol, it was just boring and kind of lacked a plot, i think that's what happens when u condense a anime series into a movie... dunno. they did the racing scenes pretty well tho

sweetbee03 - i have some friends who are going on 7/23 heh, i was gonna go with them.. but i guess i went earlier lol
wangfujing 小吃 didnt live up to my expectations =(

o i see. yes, my friends have given me like a million sites to download movies...illegally. i guess to be safe, Netflix would be a great option.
sweetbee, i heard 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and 'Batman Begins' were awesome. i'm thinking about taking my dad to see ''Mr. and Mrs. Smith', since ppl say the action is pretty good. but the last time i took him to a movie, he fell asleep during it...so what would you say? and great, maybe i'll drop by someday after you come back to borrow your dvds...;) j/k
also, someone wants to lend me 'meteor garden.' i know it was once banned in china and don't know if it really suits my 'style'. so how bad is it really?

umm i saw meteor garden 1... i thought it was ok lol, maybe cuz i watch too many chinese series shows tho.. hehe i hear the sequels are horrible tho

huh??meteor garden was banned in china???lol...i was in china then and i never heard about it.
anyone watched 仙剑奇侠传??i know i know,it's actually kinda dumb but it's so damn popular i couldn't resist. and li xiao yao is very very cute.i hate zhao ling er!!!i luv lin yue ru!!!ok u all prolly don't know what i'm talking about but if anyone has played the game before would know.
Initial D is nice! ok check out my msn space,i commented on it and has a very nice pic of jay chou.yum yum.
i just watched Sin City yesterday.dammit, couldn't sleep afterwards.quetin something taratino(sorry if i got his name wrong) is just too sick and bloody to describe. there were the kill bill series and now this. i couldn't believe that elijah woods would actually act as a psycho killer that eats ppl.eesh.i've always thought he's kinda sweet, with the blue eyes and everything.sigh...the movie's just too weird and sick.too strong for my stomach anyway.but it's too intriguing not to watch.my mom's weird.she said she didn't have trouble sleeping at all.geez...i kept running the scenes over and over again in my mind.
