I will be at choate during the summer. How are the dorm rooms?

It really depends on which dorm you live in. Hopefully you’ll get a room in South House! South House is the newest dorm on campus and it has the largest rooms. Room sizes vary by dorms, but most rooms are good sizes.

Is it hard for new sophomores to become integrated in Choate’s community?

No, not at all! I myself was a new sophomore and it was a smooth transition. Everyone is very welcoming here. I was afraid about having no friends, but I have made life long friends here. During fall term, there is a gap between new sophomores and returning students, but towards winter and spring term, it seems like all of us have been here for two years.

bumping this up!

What is the dress code for guys like? I know its not formal but how do people in general dress like. Do everyone follow the dress code and what happens if you don’t?

guys have to wear a collard shirt and pants that are not denim unless it is white denim. everyone follows dress code. teachers may sometimes send you back to your dorm to change if you are really out of dress code.

I’m thinking about applying to Choate next fall. This year, I didn’t have an interview at a school, so I was wondering if interviews are important. Do you think that they count for a large part of the application?

Was the transition to boarding school hard academically? How much work do you get each day, and are there a lot of spare time?

How are the academics at Choate?

How does Choate place you in classes? I know there are placement tests for math and languages, but what about the other classes?

I think that interviews weigh a hefty amount in the application. Your interview is the only time Choate really gets to see who you are.

Was the transition to boarding school hard academically? How much work do you get each day, and are there a lot of spare time?

It really depends on your previous level of schooling. I didn’t have a really big transition in work load. The average amount of homework per night is about 2-3 hours. Spare time really depends on your extracurricular activities. Most kids have a good amount of free time though.

How are the academics at Choate?

I think that the academics are pretty strong at Choate. At my old school I didn’t really have to work to get As but at Choate I definitely do.

How does Choate place you in classes? I know there are placement tests for math and languages, but what about the other classes?

There is only one level of English for Freshman and Sophomore year. For history, your teacher at your previous school recommends you. For science, I think your science teacher recommends you as well.

BUMP!

anyone here coming to choate next year?!

I am ! Im super nervous ! What do girls wear usually ?

Girls really can wear anything they want as long as it isn’t revealing or denim. Everyone dresses fairly well though and has good style. Once you get your student handbook in the mail, you will be able to see the exact rules.

thank you ! i mean more along the lines of brands. like is it basically jcrew world ? Lol do you know of people who shop at like zara, urban outfitters? like what are the popular brands at choate?

Don’t worry about what anyone else wears (who cares anyway?). Just bring your own style to Choate. You’ll be fine.

thank you. i just recently received my prelim schedule thingy and im a bit frustrated. at my old school, i just finished spanish 2 with a 97 average for the year. yet my schedule says i was palced in sapnish 2 again. i really would do anything to be placed in spanish 3 and i would like a challenge and work hard to prove that i belong in spanish 3 which i would have been in had i satyed at my old school. what should i do?

There’s a bit of musical chairs the first week or two of school as students are assessed and classes rearranged for best fit. You take some assessment tests online in the summer so the school can make initial placements. If, after the first week of classes, it becomes apparent that a student would be better served a level up or down, thoses changes are made. Choate wants you to be in the classes that best challenge you without being overwhelming, and they certainly don’t want you to be bored. Don’t worry about it too much. You and your teachers will be able to determine if you are in the right classes for your achievement level, and any necessary changes will be made. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the outcome.

Also, don’t assume that Spanish 2 at your previous school and Spanish 2 at Choate are the same thing. Spanish was the only class my son had to have changed – he went down a level and was very glad for the change.
