Choose your own language as foreign language(international)

Hi guys
I'm thinking about applying to upenn and I was just wondering if it would be possible, and if so would you recommend it, to choose my own language, Swedish, as my foreign language at penn?

Why, are you applying to be a part of the Huntsman program there, which requires a language choice and (eventual) proficiency? If yes, then I believe you can’t pick your native, non-US language.

If not Huntsman, then why select a specific language at all (aside from whatever language requirement re: number of language classes you might need to take to major in ?)?

And if it were me I sure wouldn’t pick my own language. That would be pretty unchallenging and boring. Learning another language may open up opportunities beyond college for you, versus just coasting out of any language requirement by showing up and writing/speaking your native language.

P.S. My answer here would apply to any college anywhere, not just UPenn and/or Huntsman.

From the Huntsman FAQ: [Frequently Asked Questions](http://huntsman.upenn.edu/page/24/Frequently%20Asked%20Questions#20)

Swedish is not a Huntsman target language, so it won’t work for Huntsman.

So why do you want to apply to the Huntsman program then? confused

He/she may not want to apply to Huntsman. He/she may just be looking at the foreign language requirement and thinking, “Hey, I am already fluent in two languages. Isn’t that good enough?” And the answer is probably yes, but probably with some details to it (like what you have to do to demonstrate your proficiency in Swedish, for which there are no APs).
