Choosing a college at UCSC

@Helpmethanks Yes, every college requires you to take a quarter long core course (w/ the exception of Stevenson which lasts 2 quarters). It is a writing course that revolves around the theme of your college.

Hey guys I’m having a reeeaally hard time picking out a UCSC college. I really liked the core courses at C9 and Merrill but now reading what people say about them, I’m not sure they’re right for me. I’ve heard the Sterile Merrill thing and I don’t know if thats for me and I’m not sure if C9 is really diverse enough or if I would click there. So a little info on that would be nice. I think Porter might be the best for me after reading more about it.

-I am a white female from norcal.
-I don’t dress like a guy or anything but I’m not super girly and I’m not preppy. I’m more of an alternative kid & people call me a hippy and a rocker. I’m definitely a goof and I don’t want to be around people who’d be put off by that. I’m not sure if that’s really an issue at UCSC but my highschool was pretty snobby like that.
-I’m a pretty social person and I do like to hang out and party. I don’t personally smoke weed but I’m from the Bay so being around it isn’t a problem for me at all xD and I drink sometimes
-I’m would like a friendly, social community:)
-Like the outdoors, dancing, music, funny people, yeah.

Sorry if I gave too much info, but I didn’t fit in with my highschool community very well and I just want to join the right college for me :)

@Helpmethanks: They renovated Cowell recently! Supposedly much better, the dorms are normal sized, I think the hallways might be a bit narrower than other colleges though.

@Sourgirl: Yup, sounds like Porter or Merrill to me. Merrill isn’t sterile, hell I live right next to it and they’ve got stuff going on over there all the time.

Okay awesome, very good to know! Also, just so I can pick a 4th and 5th choice, are Cowell and Stevenson good choices? I’ve heard that more preppy/jocky kids go there which I’m not really into, but that they’re fun schools. Would they better for me than C9/10?

Hi I’d appreciate any advice as well :)

Which college fits these the best:
-Dining hall w/good food
-High concentration of Asians (tho this isn’t really a necessity, I’m just more comfortable around them)
-Good view would be awesome (which draws me to Cowell and Stevenson as well as the proximity to the fields)
-Not very crazy on partying/weed
-Dorms that aren’t completely dilapidated

What I’m like:
-Girl but more on the tomboy side
-Into social studies and languages
-Into athletics (dance), music (rock!), food, generally hanging out and Sims
-Social so a place that is very open and outgoing would be nice. I’m pretty good with most people

I was thinking either 9/10 or Cowell/Stevenson?

so i feel like everyone just posts what they want or who they are and where to go.

i go to the gym 4-5 days a week, but i dont want to be literally right next to the gym.
i am very outgoing and social, i like to party but im not into the heavy drunk/drug scene anymore
im not into video games computers or anything nerdy (but doesn’t me i cant kick it with the nerds)
im 21 so obviously i drink but more than anything im a adult drinker, i havent binged drinked since high school.

i posted my top 5: 9, 10, oakes, cowell, and stevenson. as my choices dont know if i picked right.

Thanks for the replies! Quick question: some people have been telling me that you usually get your first choice (out of the 5 dorms we picked on the sir) is this true?

I’m really stressed out right now. Me and my best friend are going to UCSC and he’s already accepted his admission. However, I haven’t, and I now realize that the college I suggested based off of others’ suggestions (College 8) is actually not a good choice. We really want to be in the same college, and I fear that I’ve screwed him over, and I don’t wanna choose College 8 if it isn’t good.

So here’s my important question: IS IT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE YOUR PREFERENCES AFTER YOU ACCEPT THE OFFER OF ADMISSION?

If it is, HOW?!! I’m really stressing out cause I don’t want him to be ****ed at me for suggesting a bad college, and then I don’t even go too. Since he hasn’t been assigned a college, can he call/go online and change his preferences so we both end up at the same college?

THANK YOU!!!

@Y2Krisis: I just was on myUCSC and I saw a link to change your college affiliation list. Go to main menu tab and click on the “Request of College Affilation” option. From what I can see, you can change your college there:)

Sourgirl, are you a Fall 2012 freshman? Or are you a current student? Is that something that won’t take a long time (i.e.: a quarter)? Because I’ve heard that current students can change their college, but it can take up to a quarter. Can this be done before the colleges are assigned on May 7th (I think that’s the date)?

I’m a Fall 2012 freshman. I honestly don’t know for sure but seeing as they haven’t given us our official college affiliations, I think it can be done before the colleges are assigned. When you go on that link, it has the five colleges you chose when you did your intent to register and it seemed to me like you could change them. Check it out, it’s right there on the myUCSC page, so I don’t think it’s a huge process

My friend did it, and he thinks it worked! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You might’ve really helped with our social lives for our Freshmen year.

THANK YOU!!!

No problem! I almost signed up for the wrong college too before I read about all of this. That woulda sucked big time. Hope you love your college!:)

I hope so too! And because of you, I could love it even more if it all works out!

Lol, aww shucks!:stuck_out_tongue: What college did you pick anyways?

9, 10, Cowell, and the last two I’m thinking maybe Stevenson and I don’t know about my 5th preference. What about you?

I’d like some guidance here as well.

Interests:
-Music. I absolutely love music. I listen to everything from folk to harsh noise. I love going to shows and I play a tad bit of bass. Would enjoy talking to people who have relative knowledge about music.

-Videogames have recently been a huge part of my activities. I wouldn’t call myself an ultra avid gamer, but I know my way here and there.

-Science in general catches my eye, particularly Biology, since my major is Microbiology.

About Me:
-Hispanic
-Pretty social, would definitely love some kick-backs and maybe some parties. I really don’t like hanging out with ******bags though. I’d like to meet some nice, chill people.
-Open-minded when it comes to everything. I could care less about the whole weed-smoking culture. I’m neither for it, or against it.

Uhhh, that’s pretty much it. Also, I’m a guy.

Not sure if anyone’s still using this discussion, but if someone could reply I’d be really grateful.

I’m probably going to ucsc as a freshman for the 2014-15 year, and like everyone else I’m not sure which college would be best for me.

I should probably start by saying that I’m just an average-ish liberal-minded white girl. I’m pretty introverted and would like dorms that aren’t too crowded (like I wouldn’t want a triple or quad), but I do like meeting and talking to new people and I’m trying to break out of my shell more. I’m really not into the drugs/drinking scene and would prefer a college that doesn’t smell like weed. I’m smart and kind of geeky, but I don’t like being around overly antisocial people. Also I’m into a bunch of things like art, music, reading, dance, etc.

In general I’d really like a laid-back college with nice scenery and chill people. Preferably no extreme jock or hipster types.

I’d really appreciate it if someone could nudge me in the right direction?

I am also having a hard time choosing a college in ucsc!

  • I love sports and am very athletic and will be doing sports so I want ppl like me
-i am very social and like normal ppl
-i am majoring in math and science and like to take school seriously too
  • but I like to party! …just no hard core drugs and I dont smoke
