Choosing a college at UCSC

Sorta confused on where to go. Can someone give me a quick breakdown of the college stereotypes and atmosphere, I’ve read all sorts of things from previous posts, but those were years ago and I’m not sure they are accurate.

-Asian
-Into science and environment
-Play video games
-Like to go out
-Not really a sports guy
-Hate math
-Parties are good
-Sorta laid back and procrastinator

I don’t want…

-Close-minded people
-Snobs
-Drugs
-People who are an ass

I was thinking either C9 or C10, but I don’t really know the differences. So my choices so far are…

-C9
-C10
-Oakes
-C8
-Cowell

thinking about porter or kresge, however you spell it.

I’m white if that matters
a girl, I’m all for going green, some people call me a hipster, but I’m really not into judgmental people, don’t want a repeat of high school
I’m from san diego
definitely not preppy
not super in to partying and I’m trying to stay away from drugs
longtime boyfriend I’m planning to stay with

where do i go?

Hey, I was hoping someone could give me some advise on which colleges to choose.

Probably a history major and also interested in foreign languages

Don’t like parties, but don’t mind drugs at all

I kind of hate sports, don’t really like preps/jocks

I like playing guitar, but I heard you can’t bring your amp. Is there a college with a music practice room maybe?

I like video games and other laid back activities

Don’t really fit into any particular ‘clique’.

Hardcore liberals annoy me, lol

Hope that’s enough information.

CaptinJ and Evanfonzie, I am also a economics major, that goes to the gym regularly and was going to join the rugby team. I’m also from socal and have similar weekly attire am I in the twilight zone

enricab: Super nerdy kids have “lives” thank you very much. There’s plenty of socializing, even if you’re in the game themed building. But don’t pick your college for the core course. A one quarter writing class will impact your college experience wayyy less than the community you choose. If you want to hang with lots of people taking the same classes as you, Crown will be good. otherwise you do sound like Cowell/Stevenson.

Sinvid17: 9/10 are pretty similar. I think your list fits well.

courtneyhaas: Staying away from drugs at Porter/Kresge isn’t difficult, people won’t pressure you. So I think those are good choices. Also think about Merrill (not preppy, super friendly diverse community) and College 8 (preppy, but otherwise fits).

RFranken: Porter in terms of music, College 8 is an all around okay fit, Merrill is also near a music practice room, Stevenson might be good too. Stay away from Kresge and Cowell.

Why not Cowell?

Parties, sports, and jocks are the biggest selling points of Cowell.

Question: what is the point of choosing a college as a transfer? It seems completely arbitrary.

Is there much of a difference between 9 and 10?

@RFranken They are still both quite new so it’s hard to distinguish the two.

Alright. Any general info on them? I’ve read through this thread, not much mention of them really.

@RFranken Colleges 9/10 are stereotyped as the Asian-American colleges because they both have many Asian students. They are located in the center of the campus, close to the international housing block and the Engineering/Science buildings. You may want to take the location into consideration if you are planning in pursuing any majors in this field. The dining hall is also open 7 days a week (in comparison to most dining halls only open monday through friday). I believe the hours are from 7 am -11 pm.

jyoungs: It would be easier to transfer to their dorms/apartments if you don’t want to live in the transfer community. That’s about it.

Thanks, Liesel.

Well, for me, the most logical choice would be just to choose the college that houses my department.

I confirmed today and put down my 5 college choices, but I won’t be able to visit campus until May 1. If after the visit I have a change of heart on the college choices, is there any way to change my preferences?

Hey, I’m from LA and I’d really appreciate if you can help me out too. Thanks!

Female/Freshman
Social, even more when I’m around people who’re compatible with me
Looking for a triple dorm room, same gender floor
I ride a bicycle and will be skateboarding off-campus
Don’t like preppy people or dirty
I don’t do drugs or alcohol (straight edge) but that doesn’t stop me from being friendly
Studying is a must just not all the time
I love hockey A LOT
Majoring in Business Management Economics, minor in Sociology
I listen to most genres of music way more indie rock, punk and hardcore than others
Hate the smell of weed
Very feminine yet a bit of a tomboy
Will venture on the bus to San Jose or the rest of Santa Cruz
Open-minded

Can someone please help me decide which dorm to stay at? I’m between cowell and 9/10 but im open to others as well
Here’s a little info about myself

my friends call me preppy and say I’m a valley girl but I don’t consisted myself that since I’m not superficial and don’t have that blonde hair girl stereotype

I work at hollister co.

I’m kind of a girly girl but not really

I love the beach and that’s kinda why I’m looking into cowell. Also it seems the most chill… Not sure if thats true though

Im not judgemental and hate people who are too

I wasn’t part of a clic in high school so I’m open to have any type of friends as long as they are chill open minded and a little similar to me

I love to party and have fun. I love to drink however I don’t really do drugs even though I have nothing against it

I really like 9/10 because Of the new dorms but I heard that majority of the people are Asian( I have nothing against Asians but I just like diversity)

Im not really into sports

I’m usually late to everything so I don’t want to live in a dorm far away from my classes
I’ve been trying to decide for weeks now and I need serious help! Please help thanks!

@sanjoaquin: I’m fairly certain that May 1st is the deadline for switching your preferences. >_<

@lemaggiemae: Merrill, Cowell, Stevenson, and maybe College 8 would be good matches. Stay away from Porter and Kresge because of the weed smell.

@Helpmethanks: You sound a little more well matched for Cowell or Stevenson than for 9/10.

@liesel thanks you so much! Cowell is now my top choice. I’m just a little worried about the the housing since its the oldest dorm. Also I’m allergic to dust and heard that cowell has the worst looking hallways and have small rooms… Should I be worried?

Also when I took a campus tour the lady said that you have to write an essay about the college you end up staying. Is this true?
