Choosing a college at UCSC

I’m considering a physics major as well and I chose Porter as my first. I just really like artsy people so it seems just peachy, and yes the porter field is the location of most of the 4/20 activities which is a plus imho. Anybody heard about Shroom day? Probably lesser known but I heard about it from an alumni of 20 years and I’m just wondering whether or not it is still around for curiosity’s sake.

@Zaksan: Dang man maybe we will see each other at UCSC. Caraszy!

@griffin19196: Not a whole lot. Most colleges are very similar to their sister college. I think Stevenson attracts more humanities majors, but I can’t say for sure.

@Zaksan: Nope, I’ve never heard of shroom day. Perhaps you can make the motion to restart it. :P

Hi! So I sent my SIR and stuff! Not sure if i’m going to UCSC, i’m waiting on UC Davis for waitlist. I might just go to Davis if i get in.

I’m going for the neuroscience major (maybe, still undecided)
For college preferences I put
1- Crown
2- College Nine
3- Cowell College
4- Stevenson
5- Eight

Ive head of strict rule enforcement at cowell. Are there any current students who know if this is true or not?

The school in general is pretty strict about partying, if that’s what you mean.

@monkeyshinobi: I got into both Davis and Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz, though not ranked as high seemed much nicer to me. All of the bikes at Davis sort of lend this air or urgency to everything happening on campus, and the city is surrounded by fields. Santa Cruz is serene and has (from what I saw on spring spotlight) a much more dynamic student body. Just my two cents…

Hey guys, I’m about to confirm to UCSC and I only really have one question. I’ve read through a crazy amount of these threads, and have yet to see the answer to my one question: At which college do the most skateboarders (and surfers) reside? I love skateboarding, and the town is really big on it from what I’ve heard.

I went on a tour like two weeks ago and found a guy with a skateboard and asked him which college had the most skaters, and he said Kresge. Any confirmation on that?

It’s honest to goodness hard to say unless you spend a lot of time in every college. And most people do not.

I know college 8 has the reputation for having the most surfers. And I’ve seen a lot of skateboarders around 9/10. I imagine the architecture of Kresge probably attracts skateboarders, but I’ve never seen any there.

can anyone tell me about college eight? i haven’t heard many people talk about it.
also i once heard that cowell had a stereotype of having a lot of conservative born again christians. is that true?
i am trying to figure out which college to choose. i am like a normal girl from california. i am outgoing and i love the beach and hanging out. can anyone help me out? thanks!

okay well yeah i dont know which college i should choose!

Im somewhat always hyper
im very loud and sometimes am obnoxious
i am chill at times
i love to socialize but not too much
i dont really like cheerleaders, there to much for my life
i love to dance
adn most off all im a lez!

im thinking porter because i love their 4 people dorm but im stuck! HELP!

@juliehannah: That’s the most vague personal description to work off of. It could apply to half of the student body. Pretty much everyone likes to hang out, go to the beach, etc. Pretty normal for college kids. Going off of “normal”, look into Cowell, Stevenson, and College 8. No college in particular has a super large population of conservative religious people.

@maudie2011: Can’t say we have any cheerleaders here. What you described would help you pick your roommates, not your college. What are your interests? What do you want to be close to on campus?

Crazy enough, we actually do have a cheer squad.

@liesel
What about smoking pot?

Not particularly. In my experience people only get in trouble for one reason: when they’re smoking so much they make your entire hallway smell.

could someone tell me the pros and cons of college eight?

I’ve narrowed down my top choice to either Crown or Porter, but I just can’t decide. What do? I am a science nerd, an extrovert, a musician, and I enjoy the occasional Halo or Bad Company 2 match: I feel like I’d fit in well at either one. How hard is it to engage in “herbal” extracurriculars at Crown? I know they are embraced by many at Porter.

Not very hard. I smell weed around my building on a regular basis. I personally know a lot of Crownies who partake. My impression is that it’s not shared quite as openly as it is at Porter due to a lack of convenient meadow. However we do have drum circles in the north field on a monthly basis, and weed seems to be a normal part of that.

Hey guys, I’m coming over to UCSC for a year abroad from UK and after reading through here I think I’ve applied to the right colleges,
1/2. cowell/stevenson
3/4 c19
5. c8
This will be my third year so i’m 21 and I guess my only idea of american college is from movies so this could be interesting… I’m studying film, really into parties drinking, I DJ and will probably bring my decks/speakers. Are these choices alright? Anyone else put Cowell first?

can any one descirbe the colleges and their differences?
