Choosing a college at UCSC

JJK21UK: If you want to party, then stevenson/cowell is where you want to be. Both are nice colleges, im sure you’ll like them
That being said, you also mentioned that you’re studying film. Porter is really close to all of the arts/media facilities, and with its artsy reputation, attracts a lot of film majors. I think they even have a film/digital media themed hall. I would probably take porter college into consideration.

Maudie:
Cowell/Stevenson: Close to humanities, book store, and gym. Most amount of fitness buffs. more likely to party.

Crown/Merrill: up on a hill and a bit isolated, known as nerdy colleges, very close-knit though. pretty close to all of the humanities, book store, and gym as well. Dining hall closes on weekend though

C19: pretty cookie-cutter, but nice new buildings. Dining hall is open the most. Close to science hill, health center, mchenry library, and social sciences.

Porter/Kresge: near arts/media buildings, lots of artsy/hippie people, porter meadow if youre into drugs, somewhat near science hill as well. dining hall closes on weekends

8/Oakes: some sport facilities, few trees, socal feel, racially diverse, bakery is there, close to media/arts facilities as well.

Thanks for the quick reply edgefan, I couldn’t really figure out where the film buildings are because it says the film tutors offices are in communications near c19 hence why I put them 3/4. I got the impression Porter was more arts and theatre rather than film production. I might change if I knew for sure I would be going to class nearer to Porter.

@TheEdgeFan7:
Yeah cuz im majoring in feminist studies, well double majoring: Feminist and biology.

IM thinking:

Porter
Merril
Stevenson
College 8
Oaks

OR

Porter
Kresge
Meril or Stevenson???

Just an experiment here, I’d appreciate a reply. Please pick the ideal college for me to live.

I’m from Irvine, CA. I have a thing for more “urban” environments, close to as many resources as possible. I absolutely would love a view of the ocean. I’m a Mathematics major. I do have some allergies that might be agitated by certain flora there. I’m gay. I’d like a friendly community where I can jump right in and get to meet people, not feel like everyone already knows everyone else and it’s difficult to get in. I don’t mind a social/partying atmosphere with “legally-challenged” activities, I’d actually prefer that to alcohol. I absolutely would love a view of the ocean. I don’t want a closet for a dorm. Oh, and I absolutely would love a view of the ocean.

Go!

@Barnaby: The only college you’ll get a view of the ocean from in the dorms is College 8. However, I don’t think it’s the most friendly of communities. Cowell/Stevenson dorms are both very close to an ocean view. If I recall correctly the Stevenson apartments are the ones that overlook the east field and ocean. However, those buildings are older and a bit more cramped than College 8.

You’ll have no trouble making friends either way, with so many freshman, there will be no sense of “everyone already knows everyone”.

In what way is 8 unfriendly? Is it not a very social place?

thats totally wat i wannt! just a fem major!

Can anyone describe college 8? friendly crowd? seems a little remote?

^In my opinion, they seem a bit cliquey. To me, most of them appear to be all the white (or white-washed), preppy bros/chicks that didn’t get into Cowell. I don’t necessarily think they’re unfriendly. But there’s definitely a type…

Well I got rejected from UCD’s waitlist. Sooo i am going to attend UCSC! Oh and I got into Crown College! :stuck_out_tongue: My first choice~

Can anyone tell me about Oakes? Thanks:)

I am having a dilemma picking my college!!!

These may sound like opposites, but I am between College 8 and Kresge.

I got into 8 but I am thinking of appealing to Kresge. I am from Los Angeles, and not a cliquey girl at all. Here’s my story:
I spent most of my life as the chubby outsider kid. Then I started to get in shape and really fell in love with fitness, so I wanted Kresge for the kitchen. Health and fitness has become a part of my identity and I am a pretty clean-cut good girl. I worry I may not be able to connect with people at Kresge. Not that I have a problem with other people doing substances or w/e, but it is not for me. Spending much of my life as the stereotypical “fat kid” I fear the cliques at College 8.

So what do you think: should I appeal to Kresge?

Do I HAVE to live in the Transfer Community? Since I’m a Business Management major, I’d prefer to live near the social sciences buildings (College 9 and 10). Do I have a choice?

From what I heard, as a transfer student, you are required to live in the Transfer Community for at least the first quarter. After that, you are able to move off campus or try to move to a different on campus residence (if room is available).

@animalhugger

Honestly, I think you might have a harder time fitting in at Kresge. I’m not trying to rag on them or anything, but they tend to be the more hippie/hipster/pretentious-because-they-think-they’re-being-individuals-and-whatnot type of group. The drug/party scene is a lot more apparent there.
I guess what I meant when I said C8 was “cliquey” is that it’s sort of homogeneous… Like you can usually tell they’re from there.
College 8 sounds right for you simply because I think there are a lot more “health nuts” there than Kresge. You’re probably going to find more people willing to go work out at C8 and people that are going to take their studies more seriously. Not that people in Kresge don’t, but they tend to be less “hey let’s go to the library” and more “hey let’s play music and smoke outside”

In the end, it’s UCSC, and I don’t think there’s going to be much intolerance at any college you live in. I really don’t think people will be inclined to be cliquey in that way.

lakerace:
Sadly, transfers only have three choices of housing for their first quarter (minimum) if they choose to live on campus: Transfer Community, Village, and University Town Center. This is an improvement from this year, but it’s still pathetic choices. It’s no secret around here I think the TC is a joke as it offers nothing that transfers did not already receive before and that it is a detriment to both the Porter community and transfers. I was thankfully a transfer before this abomination was created.

If you want to live in university owned housing, you will have to choose one of those three and then apply during your first quarter to move into your own college if that is what you prefer. I really think if you are upset by this requirement that you voice your complaint to STARS and housing. Let them know that this is against what you would prefer. The only way to change things is to let them know the current way things are done is not liked by as many people as they would like you to think like it.

100pctslug:
There is no requirement to live on campus for anyone, transfers or frosh. Anyone can choose to live off campus if they want.

Sorry I misread it. Thanks for clearing that up, Kender.

Bumping this up because I know a lot of people are going to ask!

Since I am hearing you have to list 5 colleges when you complete SIR, I’ve decided to post my list.

 1. College 9
 2. Stevenson
 3. Crown
 4. Cowell
 5. College 10

Anyone care to comment?
