Hi,

I need help narrowing down my college list. I recently decided I don't want to attend a big university, but I'm not sure which liberal arts college to apply to. I don't want to go to schools somewhere its hot. I want to be a math and economics major.

How do you research a college and see if its right for you?

Step 1: STAY AWAY FROM RANKINGS! Their methodologies do not match what is important to you. Just stay away. Hahaha

All jokes aside, I have done at least 300 hours of research on colleges and I have come to the assumption that I like liberal arts schools more myself. Here are some that I like.

Pomona/Claremont McKenna
Lawrence University
Reed College
St. Johns (Maryland, not NM, stay away from NM)
Williams
Colorado College
Kenyon
St. Olaf

They’re all pretty good, with acceptance rates from 12% to 80%, so there’s probably a good school in there for you.

Good luck! By the way, I like Lawrence University the best :)

davidson college
muhlenberg college
lafayette college

I disagree with staying away from the rankings. Find a general area of admission standards that would work for you. For example, 1-20 in the LAC rankings is generally for people with a 3.7+ GPA, 2000+ SAT, etc. Obviously there are exceptions, and #1 is different than #20, but this is a way to narrow it down.

Once you have a range of schools that would be realistic academically, I’d start making a list of things you want in a school. Urban, rural? What region of the US? Big greek scene? There are plenty of websites that ask you these questions to help you find schools that will fit you.

Then, start researching your list on your own!

Thanks everyone :)

I thought I would be more prepared with all the obsession about college for the last 3 years. Now, I feel lost.

The rankings may or may not match what is important to you.
However, I agree with Anchser’s approach. The USNWR “National Liberal Arts Colleges” list is an o.k. place to start if at this late date you find yourself clueless.
