Choosing an online MA or MFA in Writing

I am trying to decide on an MFA in Creative writing online degree and have narrowed down a few schools, but having difficulty in making a decision. I have a BA in English from American Military University, so I am familiar with online schools and degree programs and prefer it to traditional school. Plus, I am a mom to two small children, so it’s just a better fit for me. I am a military veteran, Christian, and conservative. I am not easily offended and can have open and respectful conversations about differing perspectives. With that said, I previously attended Lindenwood’s online MFA in Creative Writing program in 2014, however dropped out as I didn’t have the time or money to complete the program (I was accepted and completed one course before dropping out, sadly). I found the course I completed to be challenging and I learned a lot, however I want to consider other schools this time as well. I have looked at Liberty University (their website does not have information on faculty or alumni for their MFA in Creative Writing program so I thought that was odd…unless maybe I missed it). I’ve looked at SNHU and they seem to have a diverse and accomplished faculty and I like that there are certificate options in teaching writing or professional writing that students can earn while working towards the MFA (I think so far I like their program the best). I’ve also looked at National University. I liked the diversity and accomplishments of their faculty as well, but they have several UC Berkeley graduates on their faculty, which isn’t an issue except I am from the Bay Area (born and raised in CA, but currently living in NC) so I know the culture there well. I am worried that should it come out what my beliefs are they may not like me much and I wouldn’t want to feel out of place or have a bad experience in the program. Part of me wants to believe that differing beliefs won’t matter or play a part in my education or experience in any program, but the current political divide in our country has me concerned. This is something that never would have crossed my mind when I looked for a school years ago. I checked out Lindenwood again just to refresh my memory…I know from experience that I liked their curriculum and faculty, but I am less impressed by their program after reviewing it this time around.

I have also considered getting an MA in Professional Writing from Liberty University, but I think an MFA would be a more enriching experience. I like both technical and creative writing and want a well-rounded experience that I can use to improve my skills in my writing overall.

Can anyone give me some insight as to what school may be best? Or is there another online school/program that offers an MFA in Creative Writing that I haven’t considered yet?

Thanks in advance!

Why do you want to get an MFA (or MA)? Is it personal enrichment or to advance your career? Many masters programs are cash cows for the university and have suspect benefits.

I love writing. Always have. I want to increase my skill and make myself more marketable as a writer. It would be mostly for personal enrichment as my current career background is in Human Resources, but I do a lot of technical writing for HR so it would help in my current field too. Long term goal though is to leave HR for a career in writing, either technical or creative (or both). I wouldn’t be paying for it either, as I can still use my GI Bill benefits from the VA.

This program has three 15 day residencies in Europe

Are you open to low-residency MFA programs? They typically require a brief (1-2 week) residency on campus or a conference facility a few times during the program that allows you to meet with your mentors/professors and engage with other students, giving you the best of both worlds. I liked the programs at UC Riverside and University of Nebraska-Omaha when I was checking into them a few years ago.

The only one I know of is St. Leo University in west central Florida. I don’t know anything about the quality of the program, but I know its director and he is a very talented person.
