Choosing Between Harvard and MIT

Is anyone else choosing between Harvard and MIT? Does anyone have advice/opinions/input that might help me make my decision?

i made that decision once upon a time..oh, no, wait, no i didn't. my mum asked, and i said, dude, if i'm going to boston, i'm totally going to mit.

it actually came down more between here and columbia (ah, nyc!) and harvey mudd (scholarship); i'm incredibly glad i ended up here. i find the people more interesting and the opportunities amazing, as well as the flexibility to create my own path. but i'm a trifle of a special case; you may want to look more at what you're thinking of majoring in, as well as what sort of person you inherently get along with. have you visited either/both?

I faced the same situation last year. I choose MIT. The other day (this is a true story) I was fallling into sleep and for some reason had the notion that I was attending Harvard. I woke up with a start, and that was when I realized how much I love MIT :)

tiro what do you want to study

For now, I think econ. However, I'm not certain.

I chose MIT because I want to be an engineer. For econ though, I'd go with Harvard. Considerably less work for the same caliber of degree (unless MIT econ isn't as hard as the rest of the university, correct me if this is true.)

I'm all for MIT, but as far as majors go, I'd be willing to bet that MIT and Harvard are comparable. It will come down to what type of person you are and what type of people you want to be around for the next four years. I'd advising visiting both campuses for a few days if possible. But if all else fails...just go with MIT :)

econ is strong at both places. have you visited? I would base your choice mostly on the atmosphere at the two schools--they're quite different...

There have been many claims that MIT's economics program is the absolute best. We know Harvard and MIT's are both great in economics. MIT is pretty hard from what I hear compared to Harvard. Economics is easier than engineering at MIT, but you still have to do all these math and science cores. Harvard has a better name, amoungst most people, but you will run into those who will love you for coming from MIT.

Kevtrice, do you know in what way MIT econ s harder? If it's more rigorous, then that's probably a good sort of hard. If it's just more busy work, then probably not, right?

One of the admissions bloggers, Mitra, is an econ major, and I'm sure she'd be happy to answer any questions you could throw at her.

I think it is probably less busy work. I am just going on the general notion that MIT is known to be harder than Harvard in similar things. I have only taken 14.01 and 14.02, though, so I can't really be sure. Econ is more math based at MIT from what I have heard.
