Choosing Colleges at UC Santa Cruz

I a going to UC Santa Cruz in the fall and I am trying to choose between which colleges/dorms to live in. I am a laid back person, and yes, I like to smoke weed. BUT I am not a super pot head, I just like it from time to time. Over summer I will probably smoke three times a week or so with friends. Sometimes more or less, it just depends. Anywho I also am athletic; I like going to the gym. But I am not stuck up at all; I have lived in So-Cal my whole life and am tired of the whole crazy party with stuck up people scene. I more like kick-backs where you can just chill and listen to music. I don't care where the dorms are on campus; I have legs for a reason and am fine walking. I guess I am kind of artsy, but not really. The only type of people that really bug me are preps. Thank you!!

I’m headed to UCSC in the fall too, and I gotta say, your description of yourself applies pretty much perfectly to me. Also, thanks for indicating that you blaze. In literally every other thread I’ve checked on here about the residential colleges, the poster made it sound like they were basically scared to death of weed. It’s Santa Cruz, people. Get used to it. Anyway, I just looked at the campus today for the second time to try to get a better feel for the different colleges.

I didn’t bother looking at Oakes, Nine, or Ten because those didnt really interest me at all.
Stevenson and Cowell were in pretty close proximity to everything, the people seemed fairly chill, the dorms were nice (the one i looked at in Cowell was kinda small though), and there was an acceptable amount of cute girls ;)
Kresge was suuuuper laid back (some hippies, but mostly stoners) and the apartment style dorm setup is kinda cool but I wasn’t sure it was for me.
Porter had nice dorms and I liked all the resources they had for music, since I play guitar. However, I’m a math and science guy for sure, and I got the feeling that it was mostly theater and arts majors who lived there. That’s fine and all, but the theater department at my high school is basically a room full of ADHD, and I’m not down for that.
College 8 had nice dorms and facilities, but it seemed really far from everything (unless I took a stupid route to get to it). Also, C8 has the reputation of being more like the “stuck up people scene” you described, and from what I saw it seemed like that could be kinda true.

Hope this helps, see ya in the fall!

Oh and Merrill was chill also, the dorms were spacious and it was close to everything.
Crown seemed really lame to be honest, and it looked to me like all the super studious people live there. Don’t get me wrong, I applied as a bio major so I’ll be spending a ton of time studying myself, but parties are cool too :D

So ya that’s basically what I got out of visiting the colleges. Although, it was hard to pick up on which colleges partied or were more chill about blazing and whatnot. If anyone could help clear that up, that would be sick! :P

okay, thank you!! this helps a lot.
