Choosing colleges based on gender ratios???

Is it stupid to choose a college based on the gender ratios of the school (E.g. 51% Male, 49% female)? I just felt that going to a college with a large majority of one gender would be a little weird for me. For example, RPI is 68% male and BU is 61% female.

As an opinion, gender balance can be an important consideration when selecting a college. Note, however, that females comprise 57% of all colleges students, so colleges with nearly exact 50/50 ratios may not represent a natural distribution of genders within a collegiate context.

I would say it’s less about choosing than about ruling out.

Many college majors are heavily unbalanced in terms of gender ratio, even at colleges that are not.

Sure, my D picked Harvey Mudd partly because it had more women overall and in her planned major than other schools like it. But… she didn’t care about the opposite gender presence – she wanted more of her own gender.

Everyone is different, but when looking for schools for my D I always take that into consideration. I think she prefers a school that is more evenly balanced which isn’t always easy to find considering many LACs have more females. Schools with engineering programs tend to attract more males. Her HS has mostly females and she doesn’t like that.

As others have said, no, not at all. That said, 61% is not really incredibly unbalanced - you probably wouldn’t even notice like you may at say, a tech school. The gender difference at RPI and BU will create very different feels. Same goes for some liberal arts colleges which can have much higher female to male ratios than BU.

Neither of our sons was interested in a majority make school. Maybe I could have actually gotten a date in college if I had gone to a school that was 65% female.

Thanks for replying everyone! I just thought I was being picky when considering gender balance.
