Choosing Safeties

Hi,

I am a UK student who intends to major in something math/finance/business oriented. I am also seeking financial aid: can you please suggest some safety schools? I've found a thread which lists all the colleges and how many grants/loans/jobs they award to internationals:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/151609-international-student-aid.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/151609-international-student-aid.html</a></p>

but I have no idea which safeties to pick.

Any advice would be much appreciated ^^. Thanks.

Um you’re going to have to be specific about your grades, extra currics and SAT scores…

I’m homeschooled, and taking the SAT and SAT Subject Tests later this year. For what it’s worth:

-I got 3 As in my Maths, Further Maths, and Physics A-levels. I also got 680 Writing, 720 Critical Reading, and 780 Maths on a SAT test paper.

Extracurriculars:

-I’ve been running (competed in a few fun runs and informal races at my club) for around four years
-I’ve been drawing, writing poetry, and fiction ever since I was young; fortunately, my mum’s kept a record of all of it. These three are, by far, my biggest ECs.
-I’ve been lifting weights regularly for the last six months

Hooks:

-I’m currently starting my own online business
-I’m also planning to do some CS research in a couple of months’ time
-I’m a couple of years younger than the average college student
-My creative writing skills; I’m going to send in supplements to all the universities that allow it

Not the most conventional student, I know, but there you have it. I’m actually going to work on my ECs over the next few months (I’m planning to take up a few martial arts, and join a writing club).

There is no such thing as a safety school for an international student who needs financial aid. All you have is matches and reaches. Your safeties would be universities in your home country.

Sit your parents or whoever it is who is going to help pay for your education down and ask them just exactly how much money they have available to spend on your education. Ask them to be brutally honest with you. Accept the financial truth. Then go see what places you can pay for, or almost pay for. Those would be your “matches”. Treat everywhere else as a “reach”.

Ok, thanks :).
