Choosing the Right College For Me (Semi-Long Thread)

Hi everyone, I am relatively new here so please forgive me. I am a freshmen (well almost a sophmore) in highschool, and I am trying to get sort of a feel for where I might go to college. I know I have quite a long time to decide, but I would like to start getting some ideas pretty soon.

General Stuff:
I go to one of the most rigerous and honored high school in the state, we are a relatively competitive school and send a few students to top universities.

We do not do class ranks.

Stats:
Well obviously these are the most important things.

Grades: I hope on graduating with around a 3.75-3.85 GPA.
I currently have a 3.4 GPA (last semester, long story, personal problems) and will probably acheive a 3.8-4.1 gpa this semster. *note: A=4.0, A+=4.5)

Classes:
Currently taking-
Biology I
Theology I
Algebra I
Intro to C++
Health (ugh, required)
Russian I

Next Year I am taking (already decided):
Chemistry I
Theology II
Advanced Geomatry
Global History II
Advanced C++ or Java
Russian II

I will probably continue through the computer science department, completing intro to computers, intro to C++, Java, AP Comp Sci, A.I.

I plan on taking 3-5 AP courses. (probably AP U.S. History, AP Comp Sci, AP Calc, AP Bio, AP stat, and maybe one other.)

I plan on continueing Russian for 4 years.

*note: my courses are very thorough and in depth. My brother goes to a high school (public, one of the best in area) and the academics are not nearly as demanding (IE: he gets 1 hour of HW a night as a freshmen, I get 2-4 hours a night, sometimes even 5 (pretty rare))

I am taking all the advanced/honours courses I can, but really our reg courses are pretty much on par/above a public honors course.

EC's (really need to work on)
Sports:
Currently I do not play a sport, I don't really know why, but next year I will be playing Inline Hockey ( hope to make varsity ), and possibly another Sport.

Awards:
None :(

Service:
Currently Tutor at a needy school in my city (4 hours a week, 100 hours+ a year) . I plan on doing this for 4 years, and it is something i truely love doing. I will probably expand my bases from here, and hopefully will improve my service opportunities.

Other EC's:
Certified Scuba Diver and love to do it.
Big into computers (really don't know what to do about this, probably will look bad)
Part of my school newspaper (writer and editor)
Probably will hold a student council position
Probably will join my quiz team.

TESTS:
obviously very important.
Next year i will take the PSAT's to get a better idea, but I am generally a very good test taker (always scored 99's on grade school tests, and very good IQ)

Hope to score 2100+ (hopeing 2200-2300+) on SAT
Do good on my SAT II subjects
ACT of 32-33+

What I am looking for:

Ok. Obviously getting into HYPS would be amazing, but being realistic here. I want a great college experience, and I want to goto a decent school. I want a VERY attractive campus. This is key. I also want a relatively small, but cozy student body (not too small, but definatly not a large student body). I would like a suburban/rural place, and I would like to have a fun group of peers that are both motivated, not slackers, but are also fun to be around. I hope that my professors would be very well educated, but also pretty personal and fun people. Money is not a HUGE object, but cheaper would be nice. Not a big partier either.

Places I have looked at:
Boston College looks like a neat place. (probably my #1 eye atm)
HYPS, but I am being realistic.
Maryland, college park.
UCSD.
UCB.
UCLA.
Notre Dame
Duke
MIT *enjoy math quite a bit
many others...........

Any input, encouragement, help, or suggestions would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks to you guys and good luck with college.

Also ideas on EC's would be nice, but I am doing a fair amount already.

Thanks.

You are smart to think ahead. Buy a PSAT or SAT review book and work with it. The GPA is not a disaster, but just try to develop consistent study habits and get the best grades that you can. The Russian is interesting. In any pool of applicants, four years of Russian is going to stand out and get you some attention. I see that as a big plus. Your ECs are fine for a freshman, but over the next few years, try to stand out and show some leadership in one. Not every EC has to be an ongoing thing. If you can think of a project, start it, lead it, and show success, that is a great thing to tell colleges. It could be a fundraiser for a big disaster or a serious local need, or a special community service campaign. Short term, but intense, and you should be the founder/leader.

I’m not good with coming up with suggestions, but there are websites that will do that for you, if you plug in your stats, what part of the country you want to be in, size of the campus, etc. My D started with that and then did a lot of research on individual schools to come up with some that she thought would be a good fit.

just trying to ressurect my thread, thanks for the replies
