CC has been a source of great ideas for several of our recent vacations. Currently hoping for some suggestions for travel ideas in late Dec-early Jan (flexible dates in this time frame as D will be home from school).
trip length will be one week or less and don’t want to spend all of the time traveling (we will be departing from Texas)
Suggestions?
Do a cruise. Travel without the packing every night.
What kind of trip are you looking for? Beach, sightseeing, shopping, exotic, city, warm or not so warm, skiing, domestic or abroad?
Do you mean for THIS year? Many good places will be booked solid for this year already.
What about an all inclusive in Cancun?
What about a big city or regional area in the US that you haven’t visited or spent much time in? Budget? Christmas in VT or other snowy areas? San Francisco or San Diego?
What is your travel budget? That time period has expensive airline fares to almost everywhere right now.
Did some TripAdvisor browsing last night and I think we want a more wintery and “Christmas festive” trip (we stay warm most of the year here in Texas)
Ski trip to Colorado was looked at (the resort areas look so festive and plenty to do)but the travel from DIA to resorts looks difficult (we do not rent cars on vacation which does cause some limitations)…
We like sightseeing, mid level activities (no 20 mile climbs, heli-skiing or camping for us)Enjoy nice meals and have not once been tempted to shop on vacation (heck we don’t even like doing that when home!)
Where can you get to a ski resort without renting a car from the airport?
You’ll save a lot of money by being able to go in early January, plus better availability. Why not rent a car? Is it because you lack winter driving skills?
Even though it is warm, how about New Orleans? If you get there after the new year, there is lots to see and do – outside of the French Quarter and the food is wonderful.
What about Santa Fe? It will be chilly, but there are great restaurants, and museums…and it’s not all that far from Texas.
What about Phoenix or someplace else in AZ? Again…not too far to travel. Lots to do in Phoenix.
Well…getting to a ski resort without a car looks possible as they have shuttles and buses but a big hassle which is disappointing. I grew up in the Midwest so drove in snow 3/4 of the year (ok half joking but it did seem like our winters lasted forever!) unfortunately I have an eye condition that doesn’t allow me to drive reliably at night…In the winter months that is a big chunk of the day.
Thanks to great CC suggestions we just spent several days in NOLA recently and loved it with all the great sightseeing and dining suggestions offered. Key west, PR, SFO and NYC were similar recent successes thanks to tips on CC!
I would love to wait till mid Jan (flights are ridiculously cheap) but only have two weeks when my daughter is out of school (approx 12/16-1/2) so our time frame is limited.
Any east coast or mid Atlantic suggestions? We have not spent much time in that area of the country.
Whistler? Apparently, there is a nice shuttle from the Vancouver airport.
I noticed that you want a festive trip. If you go in late December - early January, as you plan, the holiday decor may be already gone.
Boston? Good enough public transportation. DC is always great, lots to do. and then some.
Off to investigate Whistler, Boston and DC. I remember loving Boston in the fall many many years ago. And my daughter has never been to DC or Boston. I was thinking a more “sporty” and snowy holiday but a city visit might be just fine and better suit our needs right now…
I was going to say Chicago since they really do it up nicely for Christmas and you wouldn’t need a car in the city. But if you’re from the midwest you may already have been there done that.
We spent a long weekend over MLK day in January at the Stowe Mountain Lodge in Stowe, VT. H and I don’t downhill ski, but found lots to do. We went cross country skiing. You could also go out on snow shoes or book a sleigh ride; plus, there was a nice spa. There were other activities at the lodge and in town.
Not sure how you could get to Stowe without a car. You could fly into Burlington, VT. It is about 40 miles from Stowe. You should check with a few ski lodges to see if someone could transport you from the airport to the lodge.
Marilyn…I went to college just north of Chicago on possibly the coldest campus on earth! Then moved around a great deal and ended up back in Chicago suburbs for 10 years which is where my D graduated high school. We both then promptly moved south.
That being said we miss Chicago and it actually moved onto my potential list this morning. Plenty of shows, great food, museums…
How about Savannah or Charleston?
Silverlady–those are both on a travel list for me…can you give some suggestions for things to do, places to stay? These might be great at Christmas? Very quaint though not snowy…
