I’m writing this for my daughter. She is doing the CIEE Barcelona Business and Culture program starting in a few weeks. She carefully chose her classes to meet requirements that she needs for graduation. She got her schedule today and she only got ONE of the 5 classes she requested. The others are almost some random choice of classes, ones that she didn’t even list as alternates. The email says questions and concerns can be discussed when you arrive in Barcelona! Well, she won’t be able to graduate in 4 years with this schedule! Has this happened to anyone else? Will she have a good chance of fixing her schedule when she arrives, so she can fulfill her business requirements?
The perils of study abroad! Wondering if the given courses would possibly count as electives at IU? Then at least they would go towards the 120 hours needed for graduation. By Junior year the classes are very specific as per your daughters major, so I would think the university would do all it could to guide her in the right direction. Could you email the school in Barcelona before hand? That might give you some insight into their methods before your daughter heads out of town.
stbemtpynest, what was the outcome for your D? Was she able to switch into the classes she wanted? Did her advisor at Kelley help work things out? This is a little troublesome to me as my D wants to study abroad next year.
Still not resolved, but getting better. Before she arrived in Barcelona, she was able to correspond with the CIEE staff by email and get a new schedule that met her graduation requirements. The only problem was that on Mondays, her Spanish class at one university ends at 11:30 and her Finance class at another university begins at 11:30! Their solution? Leave the Spanish class 15 minutes early. Today was the first day of the Finance class and she said it’s a 20-minute walk so she was at least 5 minutes late. This is not a great solution in my opinion, but two other students have the same conflict so at least she won’t be the only one to leave early and arrive late to classes. But now there’s a new problem. The on-line schedule at the second university doesn’t match what CIEE sent her, and it turns out that her Finance discussion section conflicts with another class! So she emailed her CIEE advisor today. We’ll see what happens… I do have to say that everything else has been wonderful so far, but I’m not too impressed with the course scheduling. Will keep you posted
Just seeing this now. My son is planning to go abroad next year- his junior year and wanting to double major in accounting & finance.
@nstraub - D’s study abroad scheduling situation improved again after my last post. She was able to adjust her schedule to eliminate that overlapping class issue. Although she came in as an advanced Spanish student, CIEE allowed her to take all of her business and culture classes in English, as it was the only way her schedule would work. She ended up only taking one class taught in Spanish - the Spanish language class. In the end, she still ended up taking one class that didn’t fulfill any Kelley or GenEd requirements, but it worked out. She just has to take full loads both semesters senior year, which isn’t tragic. So my only warning about study abroad, especially for a double major, is to make sure you have some flexibility in your schedule, as you may not get every class that you request.
Even though she didn’t get every class she wanted, D had a wonderful study abroad experience and would do it all again even knowing that she might not get the classes she wanted. Let me know if you have any questions about studying abroad in Kelley, especially the Barcelona CIEE program.
Thank you so much
Do you know anything about T375? When did your daughter take that?
T375 is Compass III and I think students normally take that with I-Core. I think there is a different class for honors I-Core instead of T375.
Did your D take icore fall of junior year? And go away in the spring?
Yes, she did. I believe you have to complete icore before studying abroad, so unless you take icore over the summer, that’s really your only option in Kelley.
