city life

I know this is going to sound really stupid, but in all honesty I have no idea what to expect. How is living/going to school in NYC going to be? I have lived in a suburb in CT for 15 years, and recently moved to Greater Boston. I feel like I have an urge to go be in the city, but what is the feel of being at Fordham? Since RH is a secluded campus, it the NYC influence even a big deal?

Also, how is the social life and activities? I know in suburbs kids usually resort to drinking parties with marijuana, but what is a common weekend for a Fordham student?

Expensive… that sums most of city life up. :P

But more seriously, there are plenty of recent posts from myself and other students about both LC and RH life. Look through some of the threads with larger than 10 numbers of posts because there’s plenty already said.

I’m sure a current student can answer your question better, but as a parent here is what I know. At RH there is something for everyone. There are bars in the Bronx and yes, a number of kids do go regularly. My S doesn’t drink much at all but still has a fun social life. I think it helped him that he was in Queens Court freshman year where he met a number of other kdis who are not into drinking/drugs. He tends to hang out with friends and go to Arthur Avenue (great, reasonably priced Italian restaurants near campus), to a party in someone’s suite (he’s a junior so he and many friends are in suite style dorms), into Manhattan a couple of times a month for movies, concerts and events like the San Genaro festival and maybe catch a show once in a while. Without drinking/drugs I can tell you that he feels busy all the time. He has a much bigger group of friend and a much better social life at Fordham than he ever had in HS.

My friends and I love that Fordham is in the city and I think we take great advantage of this location. There’s tons of things to do in the Bronx, from the cheap bars and restaurants, to the botanical gardens/zoo, parks, cheap shopping, and museums. We’ll go into Manhattan about once or twice a week, usually early on a weekend night. We’ve seen a lot of Broadway shows (I saw five last year at an average cost of $12 a ticket). There’s also a lot of free and discounted events at museums, such as a Great Gatsby party at the Met my friends went to last year. I also went to the Marina Abromovic exhibit at the MoMA and saw Lady Gaga there by coincidence!

Some of my classes have also required or suggested museum or performance visits and I think this has enhanced my education. For example, my ancient history professor conducted a tour of the Met’s ancient Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman exhibits and my medieval art history professor showed us around the Cloisters museum. I also saw on Broadway The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino with my lit class when we were reading The Merchant of Venice.

Many Fordham students also have internships/jobs in the city, both during the summer and school year.

After all this fun in the city, it’s always nice to come home to Fordham’s traditional college campus.

Thank you! It certainly seems like there are unparalleled opportunities and adventures to any of the other schools I am choosing from.

Well, it’s NYC and there is no other place in the world like it!
