How competitive, and how abundant are civil engineering internship opportunities at UF? How are internship opportunities compared to FSU, USF, UCF, etc. Do they often require travel or are they often local?
Thank you.

Keep in mind that most internships go to Juniors and Seniors (companies like to use them as extended job interviews), and that many students never work an internship before graduating. Freshman and sophomores can get one, but their options are fewer.
Most internships are found by applying online. Even when you meet a recruiter on campus, they will ask for you to apply online. Being at UF will help a bit, as compared to the other schools, but it’s not a huge deal. The real advantage to UF, is that you’ll have more opportunities to meet recruiters and ask questions. Sometimes that can help land an interview, but the real advantage is the chance to learn more about the industry and those companies in particular.
Most internships will require travel. You will find companies in Gainesville that hire CE interns, but these slots are competitive. The key to finding an internship is by casting a wide net (apply to LOTS of companies) and, if you can, networking (nothing better than knowing a guy that knows a guy…).
Don’t forget that you also have other options, while looking for an internship. UF supports several competitive CE design teams and CE related clubs. Recruiters love to see involvement in design teams (teamwork!), and leadership experience. Also, research is an option. Lots to do (another advantage to UF).
Good Luck!
