After countless months of being torn between civil, chemical and mechanical. I thought I had it all figured out by choosing civil engineering. I’ve been talking to other engineers and it seems like civil is the lower level engineering that’s not as respected as other fields. They do more work for smaller pay. If I were to go into civil engineering my goals would to either build sustainable buildings (the thought of developing farm land makes me cringe being a farm boy myself) or building renewable energy sources such as wind turbines or solar arrays which draws me to where I was being torn. Renewable energy has no definite major and I know you can go a lot of different ways-mechanical, civil, and chemical. I do not want to be at a desk all day analyzing computer data. My skills are basic at best with computer fundamentals and what not. As stated earlier, I am a farm boy and like more hands on work. At its very basic I still don’t know which engineering is a good suit for me and my desires and need a little guidance form people in all these types of majors for their inputs. Any input is appreciated!
Pick the engineering major that you like and love. If you do what you love, you’ve made the right choice. None of the standard engineering fields are bad choices.
Have you already started school? Many engineering programs allow you to be “undecided” or allow you to switch freely between majors for your first year or two. If so, after you’ve taken a few classes (and talk with a bunch of other students, gone on plant tours, etc.), you’ll have a much better sense of which major is best for you.
Good Luck!
Yeah I am in school now. Already maxed out my prerequists and it’s time to decide for next year. There’s a few “in between” majors like biosystem and agriculture eng that involves bio energy but I think employers would see that and shy away because they never heard of it.
