Claiming dependent adults for taxes

My so is 26 and lives with me. He contributes $500 a month towards expenses. I am able to claim him as a dependent on my taxes. I own my own home. He doesn’t think it’s fair. I’m torn.

Did he earn less than $4200 a year in 2019? Did you provide more than half of his support last year? Unless those two conditions are met, tax laws do not define him as a dependent.

Is the stimulus check what is causing issues about declaring him a dependents? If he is independent this year, though dependent last year, it is likely he will get stimulus money ( though it has not yet been officially announced) later, like when he files his 2020 taxes. I have a son who was most definitely a dependent last year who has not been this year, and he’s a bit sour about not getting that sorely needed check right now
