Hi, First, I am a graduate student. We lived with my in-laws most of the 2012 and they were going to claim our daughter in 2012. My husband just started working full time and we moved out on our own, with our daughter. We will claim her for 2013 and future years. I was wondering how that may affect the financial aid I will receive for the 2013-14 school year?

Federal grants available to undergraduate students only; so graduate students just get unsudsidized loans

Did you and your husband have earned income? You may be getting more tax refunds if you claim your daughter. Do the taxes both ways and compare.

I’m a graduate student and last year I did receive a grant from the school and loans. It wasn’t a Pell Grant, but from another source (I don’t remember from where).

Also, we did do it both ways, but it really wasn’t going to help us as much as it will them. Since they did support us, we wanted to help them. I just don’t know how it will affect my getting a grant again. I plan to call the school, but usually no one there helps me or other students. My husband only got 1099’s and after expenses, it wasn’t much income. Thankfully, he has a much better job this year.
