I have a huge dilemma that I need to resolve in the next 5 days! I am an international student and am interested in the areas of psychology, theater, anthropology and sociology. I have to decide between Tufts and Claremont McKenna for my liberal arts undergrad degree as I have been accepted to both.

I am finding it very tough deciding which one would be best for me and my interests. CMC is extremely prestigious within the US whilst Tufts seems to be better known internationally. CMC is strong in the areas of Psychology but I would say that Tufts is stronger in Theater and the humanities. And then there's the issue of WEATHER! Californian weather is just so appealing in comparison to Bostonian weather but at the same time Tufts is much closer to Boston than CMC is to LA.

Please please help me out! I would love to hear your views and would be happy to return the favor!!

Oh also, I have ben offered a Merit-based scholarship at CMC, which tips the balance a bit for me.

What is the likelihood that there are people on this forum who could give you an in depth comparison between these two schools that you could not provide yourself with campus visits and some thoughts about region and community?

Unless the rare person who transferred from one to the other (or better yet, the even more rare Professor who has worked at both) stumbles upon this thread, these sort of questions usually only yield one sort of reply. That is: You get people who have gone to one (or hope to go to one) and can tell you how much they love it, but they’ve read, somewhere that the other college is also 'really good."

Answer here is pretty simple, both of these schools hit an adequate mark for relative academic excellence, both have high degrees of happy students. So the question is: Boston Suburb vs. LA Suburb?

Hi Kimaya94, I am a current Rising CMC junior and I was actually deciding between Tufts, CMC, Berkeley, University College London and McGill (Canada). I chose CMC, and could not be happier. It is literally the most awesome place I’ve ever been to, and I think the best decision I have ever made. Of course, I have never attended tufts before, but I believe the undergraduate education here is much higher than many universities in the US. The class sizes here are extremely small, and the professors are very accessible and friendly. I’m sure that you know all of this and have done your research, but going to school here is unlike any other college experience in the country. You must have chosen by now, do you mind sharing which one you decided to go to? Also, Claremont is not that far away from LA, only about 45 minutes from downtown. People often think that it’s like 2-3 hours away, which is completely untrue.

I would love to know how you get from Claremont to LA in 45 minutes. I never managed it in less than an hour and half. And there were times in bad traffic that it took two and a half. One miserable day, it took nearly four hours to get from LAX to Claremont, but that was on a Friday afternoon in rush hour, when no one in their right mind should be on the road then unless they have to! But that doesn’t undermine the very valid point, that LA is accessible for Claremont students who want to take advantage of LA’s offerings. My son did it alot, but he tended to take the train. It was easier, even if you had to deal with buses or taxis in LA.
