Clarinet Major: Help charting a (realistic) course

There is a summer program up at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music called Crane Youth Music; it begins on June 30 and runs for a few weeks. Don’t have experience with this program, but know of people who highly endorse it. They can accommodate late arrivals, according to their website. And I will add to the chorus of people here saying that summer programs are terrific places for young students to grow and explore.

Wow, @kokotg, good for you for looking into bassoon costs before doing it. We said fine before we even looked at rental costs. Did we learn our lesson for the next 3 kids! It was cheaper to purchase a used plastic one since we knew that S would play it at least through 2 years of middle school. Had to upgrade to a wooden student model for HS and are now being told that we’d have to upgrade to a pro model for college. It never ends. Good luck!

My daughter has said that private lessons and playing in a local youth symphony were 2 of her 3 best decisions in high school music. (The 3rd was doing marching band, but she’s a music ed major.) The youth symphony exposed her to orchestra music (vs band) and the experience of playing solo on a part. Private lessons were key in her development; well over half of the kids in her high school’s top band take private lessons. Look at local colleges/universities and local symphony orchestras for teachers. For summer camps, many state universities offer short summer sessions, a week or two. I’d also add a vote for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and also Interlochen in Michigan.
