Oh hi everyone I’m a 2010 Clarkie. I just want to add to this thread by saying that the experience I had as a Clark Scholar tremendously helped me (both in terms of gaining knowledge and getting into college/obtaining internships). It’s an amazing opportunity and I cannot say enough good things about it.

If anyone have any questions about the program, feel free to PM me.

I’m strongly considering, and probably planning on, applying. I’m a junior, and I’m most interested in doing biology-related research. I don’t have a ton of research experience (though I do have some). I have great grades and should hopefully be able to get some good recs, and my PSAT and SAT are >235(0). The main challenge for me is the narrative.

So I suppose I’m pretty well qualified. But the fact that they only take 12 is daunting, to say the least-- any words of wisdom for a lowly junior like myself?

I’m also planning on applying to RSI, though I’m probably even more of a longshot there since I only have one research project I’ve ever done (though it did get to the state level and win a first place divisional award). My backup is taking summer classes at the local university.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.
Here’s hoping we all get in!

I don’t quite understand how to fill out the application-- it’s a web form, but it doesn’t have a “submit” button. Are you supposed to type into it and then print out the web page? Or are you supposed to print it out and fill it out by hand? Most other summer programs make it more clear by having the application in a PDF, but this doesn’t make as much sense to me.

Also, they ask for a copy of PSAT and SAT exam results. Do you have to get an official copy sent from the College Board? I don’t think they even send out PSAT results… or is your school supposed to print them out in your sealed transcript envelope?

Finally, does anyone know when they notify applicants of their admission? I’m curious because I’ll be needing to plan out when I’m going to apply to other summer programs and stuff like that.

Sorry for these nooby questions, I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t messing anything up. This program sounds absolutely awesome and I can’t wait to apply and hopefully attend.

@litotes: Don’t bother to pay College Board. Just photocopy them or print them out. From last year’s thread, offers are made from late April to early May.

litotes, we got decisions back in early May last year and you should just fill out the forms and print them out. They’ll want your application in the mail. And energize is right; just print out your scores from the College Board website (doesn’t matter that it’s not “official”).

I didn’t make it in last year, so I wish you all the best of luck in getting in, but remember that only 12 make it so don’t feel bad later on if you don’t get in. Good luck. :)

For the three letters of recommendation, if both of our research interests are science, should we only ask science and math teachers for the recs?

Or should I ask two science/1 humanities?

Also, does which field you apply in affect your chances of acceptance? For example, I’m primarily interested in science, so I would normally put science options for my first two choices. But I also enjoy history. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, internationals are definitely welcome to apply. I was one last year Also for recs, I really think it’s up to you to choose the teacher who you think connect with better and will best advocate for you. I think the field kind of does matter? But there were plenty of Biology Clarkies last year just putting it out there so if you are interested in biology choose that!
@ dchenfire, I don’t see any harm in putting history if that’s one of your interests. I’m pretty sure there are mentors in that field. Just don’t put something really obscure like marine biology b/c Texas Tech is in Lubbock and its pretty dry and hot there and I don’t think TTU has a major department dedicated to that XD

I was wondering if both fields I’m applying to for science, can I have the recs be 2 science/1 humanities? Or should I try to get all 3 to be science/math. And should we send supplementary letters of rec? Also, all of the recs should be from high school teachers right? Thanks!

This program sounds really interesting. The problem is, 3 letters of recommendation is honestly a lot, and I already asked for 2 for the Senate Page program… Maybe I can ask those same teachers to rework them for the Clark Scholars program.

Does anyone know which part of the application receives the biggest weight - extracurriculars, recs, grades, test scores, etc? I’ve had all A’s since second semester freshmen year with pretty rigorous courses; 229 PSAT (80 CR 80 W 69 M :/) and 34 ACT. The thing is, I don’t want to bother applying if I don’t have any chance at getting in…(I’d be applying for history or poli sci research, fyi.)

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about applying to the Clark Scholars Program after the great reviews you guys gave it! But I’m definitely worried that I don’t have all of the qualifications that some of the other applicants have! I would probably apply for research in mathematics because I have taken BC Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, and Complex Variables at a nearby university. For all of you who researched math, are these sufficient qualifications? I come from a pretty small school with no information on the program, so I have no clue what to expect! Also, since I’m a junior I have only taken the SAT once. I didn’t realize that it would matter if I didn’t do great (I only recently found out about the program) so I didn’t study too much and I got a 2200. I know this is well below 2350! I’m not so sure if I should apply, so any advice from previous Clarkies would be so great!!!

On the application, there is Part B and Part C in which you have to write why you chose that research and your personal information. Below the directions, it has a text box in which you can type limitlessly (I realized that if you keep pressing the “Enter” button, a scroll will appear on the side so technically you can write 1000000000 words). However, in the directions for part B, it says “limit this to this page–be concise.” Does that mean type as much as you want as long as the scroll does not come up on the side? Then for Part C, it says limit your narrative to 1 page. Does this mean type up an essay of 1 page on Microsoft Word Document and then copy & paste it into the box or simply attach a page of the essay and leave the text box blank? I realized that a 1 page font 12 Times New Roman essay is NOT equivalent to the text box under Part C. Thus, if i theoretically wrote exactly 1 page long essay, a scroll would show up next to the text box in Part C.

All of this would not be a problem if the application could be sent online, but it says specifically to mail the application, not online. I wish there were better, clearer directions. :(

I was wondering whether we will have to send both our PSAT and SAT results or whether we can choose to report just the PSAT results?

Also, are the faculty that mentor you just any faculty at Texas Tech that are in your field? Or is there a way of knowing who the faculty would be in your field otherwise?

@anonymousx37: remember we have to print out the application so the scrolling would not work. On the flip side, we still can drag the box given to a larger box if we click the lower right hand corner, so…i guess we fall into the same question…how do you know what is one page?
