Clark Scholars 2015

hella bracing myself for rejection

I feel you

It’s ok if i convince myself enough that i won’t make it now i won’t be as dissappointed mid April

Here are some of my stats. I applied to three other programs and was just rejected from two of them, so my hopes aren’t too high.

SAT: N/A
ACT: N/A
PSAT: 223 (73 for math and writing, 77 for reading)
GPA: around 3.95
Rank: my school isn’t into this
SAT II: Physics (790)
AP: Biology (4), Calculus BC (5), Physics (5), World History (5)

ECs
Research Internship at an Ivy Uni (Engineering dept, if that makes any difference)
Student Council Secretary
Class Council Secretary fresh and soph years, now just a member
FTC Robotics Team member
Physics Team Member
Volunteer tutor for at-risk middle schoolers
Piano teacher for elementary school kiddos
English volunteer tutor for ESL kiddos

Recs should be pretty solid, got two of them from my school and one from my research mentor. I’m close with all of them, but I’m not expecting anything ~outstanding~

Talked a lot about how my past research experience shaped me as a person in my essay.
I’m pretty sure I’m just an average applicant, but maybe I’ll get lucky?

Wow, @tobukoro‌ your experience should definitely make up for the stats, unless they really wanted you to have taken the SAT/ACT for some reason.

Here are my stats. Probably more or less the same as last year, and I got rejected last year :frowning: but my essays were better this year, so who knows? My SAT score was higher this year, and so was my GPA. But ECs, etc. were about the same. If anything will get me in, it’ll be my essays.

SAT: 2400
ACT: 36 composite
PSAT: 230 (74 for math and writing, 72 for reading, 76 for writing)
GPA: around 3.96 unweighted (4.43 weighted)
Rank: my school doesn’t rank, but top quintile
SAT II: Math 2 (800), Chemistry (800)
AP: Biology (5), Calculus BC (5), Chemistry (5), US History (5), US Gov (5), English Lang (5), Stats (5)

ECs
Conducted original research on astrophysics (computer project) that won 1st at my local science fair
Math club, science olympiad (Public Relations Officer), model un, Future Problem Solvers, Violin, Piano, Academic Challenge, etc. volunteered as a science camp counselor and did other community service around the city. Vice President of Music for Society, started the Astronomy Club, and participated in a one-week nuclear physics summer camp. Tutored math and science since freshman year. There were others, like Key Club (had a total of 20 ECs).

I imagine recs from my government teacher and research mentor (who was also my online astrophysics teacher) were amazing. Physics teacher rec was probably decent too.

I don’t remember what I talked about in my essays, but talked about how E.T., science olympiad, Brian Greene’s documentaries, etc. inspired me for physics and astronomy. Let’s see

20 ECs does not sound reasonable…how can a human do 20!!!
i remember I had so many positions at diff clubs i had to resign half of them because i just didn’t have time

@BasedBioGod‌ That was total, including a few I only did for a year or two, and things I did over the summer. Idk if I should’ve included them though.

I didn’t get that email saying that the results were going to come out mid-April…is that something to be concerned about? I confirmed with them that my application was received a month after I sent it.

HOLY CRAP DID ANYONE ELSE GET THEIR LETTER???

@Chickenwing12‌ for acceptance or rejection??

@Chickenwing12‌ was that a last-minute April Fool’s day joke?

Yeah!

Dang you :frowning: on the other hand, only around 2 weeks left until we find out!

Hahaha but seriously though, good luck guys.

If in the past couple months, I’ve done a lot of stuff related to science that could help contribute to my application (Qualified for Intel in very competitive region, State Science Olympiad, more science fairs, getting a patent, etc.) Would it be recommended that I send them an email updating them on these things? Kind of like how people send colleges updates when they’re on their waitlist. I feel that it would strengthen my application but I don’t want to seem overly…you know…pushy/eager/annoying? thank you very much!!

@lkim97‌

Out of what you listed, the patent part seems quite attractive. I’m not exactly sure. There’s probably like one week until they finalized the 12 people they want. If theres like a pool of people they cut down to (say like 30 people) and you’re in that group, i would imagine it would help you. If not, it would only give them a chance to reconsider you (perhaps). So I don’t think it would hurt? Give it a shot!

Haha, Based you just made things a whole lot harder for the other applicants :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you guys think we’ll be notified sometime next week?

@Awesomenitrocity‌
nah XD
I may have made it harder for one other applicant :stuck_out_tongue:

@idkschool‌
Yup, they said mid April.

LOL i had a friend last year who sent an update but he told me they didn’t respond and he didn’t make it (despite really good stats) so I personally have tried to hold back on doing that. But @lkim97‌ that’s just me you do you! good luck :slight_smile:
