the clark scholar program can TOTALLY kick the baylor high school summer science research program's ass. first with baylor you have to pay $300-400 for a meal plan, whereas at texas tech they pay you $750. second, baylor is for like 4-5 weeks and clark scholars is 7 weeks. third, baylor starts right at the end of may, so you don't have ANY down time for summer before the program, while clark scholars starts in mid-june so you can hang out with friends for a few weeks. and last but not least, very few, if any, baylor people get semifinalist or finalist at things like siemens and sts, but at clark around 3-4 of the 12 are honored yearly.

heh. that's all to say, come be a clark scholar because it is definitely better than being a baylor fellow.

But at baylor u get to start ur own research project and i think they pay to have ur family and 1 teacher come and see ur presentation at the end.

For me baylor wasnt an option (it starts like 20 days before school gets out). The Clark program starts 1 day after school gets out (for me).

Overall however i would tell u to go for clark. it seems more FUN!

my lord, your school gets out LATE. baylor for me starts a week and a half after school ends. and i most def agree with c00kie in that the clark experience (from all the alums i've talked to) seems waay more laid back and social. but of course i'm biased towards clark.

u kiddin' me? if i had heard i wouldve posted it a hundred places by now!! :P lol jk

NO i havent heard...ive given up hope anyways. I put down physics as my research area. Problem is, there is only like one physics mentor for the entire program (its on the website). So everybody who put down physics would be competing for the same spot. Plus, what i described as my interest regarding physics should match with that physics mentor's research area for us to be paired. Hopefully one of my other applications will turn out good.

That is prolly a main criteria for selecting ppl for the program. This is a small program. The GOOD thing is that the group can be really close-knit and we can all have fun. The BAD thing is that there are only a handful of mentors. In big programs like RSI or NIH, no matter what u put down as a researach area SOME mentor would be doing it, so they would pick u based on ur credentials alone. A main part of the selection process for this program is prolly eliminating ppl whose interests in research do not match with an available mentor's research. Once theyve weeded those ppl out, the REAL selection process (using ur essay, ur resume, and all that jazz) would begin.

P.S. what??!! doesnt baylor start on like May 18? if ur school getrs out a week and a half earlier, final exams would be smack dab in the middle of AP exams!! are they?

cookie: first, i wouldnt quite give up hope because they seem to be notifying people at various times. also, i doubt that is true about the selection process. if they did it solely by if they could find a mentor for you, why would they give so many potential areas of interest as an option. obviously it would be best for the program if they picked the best applicants as possible, so its highly unlikely that an adcom would week out ppl without first considering the entire application.

bluebear: congrats! i would have to agree w/ what everyone has said about baylor. it looks like a decent program, but clark seems to have a lot more to offer such as a long period of research and it doesn't interfer with school. however if you dont want ur whole summer to be research pick baylor. hope to see you at TexasTech!

Yeah guys, Clark Scholars is awesome, both in research experience and the time you spend on evenings and weekends. I was in it the year before last. PM me if you want to talk about it.

i got an official email today telling me who my mentor would be and gave me some forms to send in. i'm excited bc its the first time they have said anything to me in writing and it's actually going to happen!!

anybody else hear or get official notification?

Yes, I got mine too. I am so excited!!! Still so surreal. Were you able to extract the file they sent? I was only able to open the word documents.

did everyone hear back already?? I have gotten a call, email, letter, or anything. So I was just wondering if they already contacted ALL the accepted students.

I think they contacted all accepted, they sent emails out yesterday. They are prob waiting to see if everyone accepts. From the email they said there is a waiting list, so if someones descides not to go I am guessing they will pull someone from the waitlist.

wait the deadline is March 7th!!! So, how come people already started hearing? It is NOT first come first serve basis sorta thing or is it?
