I’m trying to decide between these 2 schools right now. Can anyone tell me something about one or both of them that I may not see on their website but is important to know?
So about me: I am a highschool senior. I’m thinking about going into political science. I’m kind of shy, but so a college too crazy with parties may not be right for me, but also a very quiet school may not either, since it may prevent me from really getting out there much. I’m also very into socail action.
Could anyone help with this? It’s been about a month, still unsure.
An update to the OP: I’ve also been interested in business along with the either political science and public policy. I’m also very interested in joining the Hillel at either college.
You will have to decide which you like more. In your shoes, I would pick Clark, but that’s me. I don’t think they are as similar in student body and reputation as some other schools people compare on these threads; that said, I am sure there will be great professors and smart students at both, and what matters most is where you feel you will be happy and thrive.
In terms of your stated interests, Clark has a sizeable Jewish population and a very strong commitment to social action. Goucher is closer to the District of Columbia if that matters to you as a poli sci major.
I have never been to Goucher so I can’t comment on it in depth. I did not attend Clark personally, but I know someone who did, and I visited it recently with my son and we were very favorably impressed. You couldn’t find a warmer, more friendly atmosphere on campus! Everyone was so nice, from students who passed us on campus (many engaged us in conversation and one even walked us back to his dorm so we could see a room) to the staff, including a super-friendly woman at the desk in the library.
Some people don’t like Worcester, but those same people would probably not like Baltimore either. We ate at an inexpensive restaurant that was a short walk from Clark that served Mexican/ Central American/ South American type foods, and it was great. The neighborhood felt fine to us, walking around, and Clark provides a lot of community service opportunities.
Have you visited both? If you can, that may give you some clarity. If not, try this site plus other review sites and college guide books and read to get a feel for both.
Clark. IMO, it is a much better and more respected school. We found the kids to be smart and friendly at Clark. Goucher, while not a bad school, felt like an overgrown high school, to both me and my daughter. Clark has nicer facilities and a better ratio of male to female. Goucher seems to be a good place for creativity, if that is what you are into. Clark regularly makes lists for its social awareness.
I was going to say almost exactly the same things as @Lindagaf I think that Clark is somewhat more rigorous academically than Goucher. I believe that both are featured in the Colleges That Change Lives book, so you might want to read those descriptions to see if that helps. Clark also has a relatively strong % of international students, which might enhance your learning experience, given your interest in political science. My daughter considered applying and found its commitment to inclusion and social justice to be attractive.
Thanks everyone! Btw, the other colleges I got into were Emerson(didn’t like the smaller campus as much, city a bit too crazy), Union(heard from people about it being preppy), and American (got in spring 2018 semester, and even though I like the school I want to experience starting with everyone else in my class), but for the reasons I said, I narrowed it down to these 2.
So with Clark, if anyone went there, what is the student body like? Im very into politics, and like not into sports at all, so wasn’t sure what the interest of many of the students there was.
