Class of '19 Roll Call...who's applied and who's been accepted

We got the Engineering Leadership Scholarship letter last week! We are looking forward to our visit this Friday!

amazondotmom (gr8 name, btw!)…I hope you have some time to visit the Moody Music facility and/or speak w/ some School of Music people about continuing your son’s involvement in music w/ the Huxford Symphony. PM me if you want any personal info on that - my son plays the bass (as a non-major), and has been able to participate every semester so far, while studying engineering. There are other posts/threads on this forum if you search “Huxford”. Enjoy your visit. ;)

aeromom thanks for the information! I hope my son can play in the Orchestra and be in engineering. Orchestra has been such a wonderful experience for my son. I guess it would be something familiar to him while he is at college. Most of his friends were in orchestra too and it might be a great place for him to meet people. I haven’t received my itinerary yet, but I do want to check out Moody Music building and perhaps meet Wendy Richman (Viola prof).

I think I’m considering more liberal arts majors instead of math… polisci and philosophy are beginning to sound really appealing to me

Posted earlier that daughter was accepted to UA with a Presidential Scholarship and has applied to the Honors College. She is interested in majoring in math. We are going to Tuscaloosa next week to visit for the second time. The first time was this past spring and we just did the campus tour. We loved the campus and the atmosphere. This time we would like a more in-depth visit so that we can learn more about the Honors College and her intended major. She would like to sit in on a math class if possible. I e-mailed the regional recruiter, whom we had been in contact with before, to see if she could set up some meetings. I haven’t heard back from her yet; I’m sure she is very busy this time of year. Does anyone have any suggestions as to who else I might contact to set up some meetings during our visit next week?

Contact the honors college directly. It’s kinda short notice, but they do a terrific job of setting up meetings and specific tours. Be sure to schedule some time with Dr. Sharpe. Also ask to meet one on one with a math professor or head of the math dept.

I just noticed that the weather on Friday has a forecast of 80% rain. our tour is on Friday. There is nothing we can do about the rain, but we really want to get the feel of the campus. We will be getting in late Thursday afternoon and will try to walk around campus before the rain comes that evening. Does anyone have any recommendations of places and things to see while the weather is nice?

@amazondotmom, if you tour both the Honors College and the Engineering complex, you’ll get a nice feel for the campus as the walk requires you to cross the large grassy quad (and past the Denny Chimes). I highly recommend checking out the public sculpture garden, which resides along the way:

http://art.ua.edu/gallery/public-sculpture/

It does rain like cats and dogs in Tuscaloosa, so you’ll get the “full experience” if it does indeed rain!

The Honors College is wonderful about arranging customized tours. We didn’t have a scheduled meeting with Dr. Sharpe, but we got to meet him anyway as he stopped us to see if he could offer any help with directions and spent several minutes with my son and me. Very impressive individual!

Also, sorry if I missed where you’ll be staying, but if you end up at The Capstone Hotel, you’ll be very close to Bryant-Denny Stadium and a number of other other sports facilities, along with the Paul W. Bryant Museum.

If you have time for a bus tour, you’ll get a full sampling of the campus.

Stroll down University Blvd, and you’ll see some of the most impressive sights on campus - the large fraternity houses, the President’s residence, Bryant-Denny Stadium, and then the strip outside campus where the restaurants and stores are. From the Quad, head north to the Ferguson Center where you can visit the new student center and the Supe Store for all the Bama paraphernalia and souvenirs, and the US’s largest Starbucks.

So I got my acceptance yesterday and my parents are being a bit difficult about me visiting because im sure that once I visit i wil 100% lock in to UA as my final choice. the problem is they don’t really want me going or even taking a visit so im not sure what to do. I think the main issue is that flights from SFO to Birminghm are long and expensive. Any advice on how to warm them up to the idea?

@speechprincess‌

Congrats on your acceptance!

Well, if you can search for some flights and come at a lower cost time, that would help. Maybe someone here can recommend airlines that would be a better price from SFO.

Also, when you do fly, be prepared. Take the initiative to know where to go, find the gates, etc. You need to demonstrate to your parents that you can handle this alone.

In the meantime, contact the Forensics person and find out if you can meet with him/her when you come.

So I submitted my housing application and deposit, when will I find out my room selection date and get a roommate?

Student Gender: Male

@mom2collegekids‌ Do you know if it possible to get a 100% full ride at Bama? I’m a NMF with a 36 ACT, but all they will give me is tuition + 1 year of housing. Are there any other scholarships I should apply to? Bama is not my first choice, but it will significantly rise in my college list if I don’t have to pay anything. Thanks!

@indianboy2400‌

Congrats on your stats!

??

That is not true. You’ll get:

5 years of tuition
1 year of housing
3500 per year stipend from the univ
2500 per year stipend from Engineering
2000 one time study abroad
ipad

There are some near full-ride awards and as an instate student, you would have an edge.

Student Gender:M

Home State:IN

Date Applied:Late Aug or early Sept.

Date Accepted:Mid Sept.

Have you visited the campus?:No

Major:Engineering

Applying to the Honors College?:didn’t know there was one

Career goal(s):Mech. Engineer

Any else you’d like to mention: 4.1 weighted g.p.a… 1360 CR and M SAT…Full tuition plus 2500 due to engineering supplement…Anyone have anything good or bad to say about their engineering program? I look to major in mechanical and work with motorcycles/cars/planes etc…

@phillyy15 check the UA housing site. It will be much later in this academic year - last year, they took the housing application complete dates of Oct 1, 2013 - Feb 1, 2014 and assigned initial room selection dates and times on May 1, May 6, and May 9 2014. We knew early March about the electronic dates - so kids could start figuring out what they want and find room-mates. Those three days had electronic access to the housing system to assign a room once you were in and selected a room with open beds. Once you electronically selected the housing - say you had access on first date, you could always go back in and make adjustments, but essentially you want to figure out which dorm and what kind of room you want, and hopefully have your room-mate matches before it all starts. Students enter some info on the housing site (using their MyBama account access) and also communicate to these students via their UA email account and other methods between the students (so maybe an initial email giving facebook or cell info). DD wanted honors housing and a specific site. The two students have to confirm each other for one to electronically put them in a room by the first one to have access. My daughter knew a student from her HS and they selected each other; then we found two other girls and all four selected each other - so my daughter who had first electronic access secured the suite and got each of them assigned to a room (knew which two wanted to share the bathrooms together). Under this system, only one of the students needs the electronic access priority, but the students have to confirm each other on the housing system for the selections to take. In our case, two had electronic access, and two did not (they applied for housing after Feb 1). The earlier you know students that want similar housing and you both want each other as room-mates the better.

Feel free to PM me if you have other specific questions.

Information is available on the UA housing site, and more becomes available as the current school year goes on. You can also call housing and ask specific questions - which I did several times and received good answers.

Hi All,

Just checking on this–as it has appeared in past threads…if a ‘student’ tab now appears on the MyBama site and there is a link to pay a deposit in the Academics tab–does that pretty much mean my daughter has been accepted? All replies to others in the past have suggested this is the case. Just thought I’d get the most up-to-date viewpoint :)

Thanks!
