Class of 2009 representin'!

Hey, everyone. My dad and I just had our final talk about college decisions, and we solidified my plans to attend Rose-Hulman this fall! Woohoo! Who else is planning to attend Rose next year?

I'm really looking forward to it...the small classes, excellent professors, and close-knit community are the perfect environment for burgeoning engineers. I can't wait to meet my classmates.

Here're my stats and info:

1530 SAT, 33 ACT (34 V, 35 M...messed up sci and reading); 4.4 W GPA (3.9 uw)
18 year-old male
Interested in EE
Come from a small private school in Memphis, TN
If any fellow classmates want to chat, my AIM handle is y2kwizardmus

I'm looking forward greatly to hearing from the other members of the class of 2009. Go Fighting Engineers!

Hunh. I'm rather surprised that we don't have that many Rose students on CC. I wonder if more will sign on as time goes on. Maybe it's just that there are so few students who are matriculating this year...dunno.

I might as well post here, I guess. I'm not sure if I'll be going to Rose next year, but it's prolly the most likely thing. I was waitlisted by Caltech, so I have to hear from them before I can know for sure, but I don't think I'm particularly likely to get off. Anyway, the waitlist was why I didn't respond earlier, even though I saw this post.

Dunno if you want my stats or not, but I may as well give them.
1570 SAT (800 m, 770 v)
17 year old male
Academically, I am very strongly interested in math.
Apart from school, I like sci-fi TV shows, and the usualy sort of geeky things.
Feel free to AIM me at RedPsion.

I am definitely looking forward to meeting you!

Wow, those are some really impressive credentials. I also saw your posts about the AIME, and I'm amazed at your dedication and talent. Rose would be quite lucky to have you. Of course, we all do hope that you'll be taken off the CalTech waitlist...sounds like a great match. Good luck!

Heh..thanks! Of course, I completely forgot to mention by far the weakest point of my application: my GPA/Class rank. My school uses an unweighted system, and it's really pretty crazy, as getting one B puts you out of the top five percent. My GPA is a 3.76, which barely keeps me in the top 20. There's definitely a good reason (I have a serious medical condition), but eh. It's still definitely my fault.

As far as next year, either way, I win. While I definitely think Caltech is the best place for me, Rose would be really great too, and there would definitely be advantages to choosing Rose over Caltech. Oh, well. I'll just have to wait until sometime after May 1st.

Entering class is what, 450 people? How many people do you know that are haeded to Rose? There's a girl in my school who I kinda know who's heading there, but other than that, I don't know anyone. I'm sorta surprised that Rose hasn't done much with setting up a message board or something for students that are going there. It'd certainly be cool to meet lots of people online, but as it stands, I'm definitely happy to meet you!

As far as the GPA thing goes, I've got a friend who is in the exact same position when it comes to college apps. He has a 1590 on his SAT and is a really smart guy...he's very quick when it comes to anything mathematical. But his GPA isn't that great because of a general lack of study skills (I think he has a nervous disorder of some sort...ADD, maybe?). I think he's going to UT Austin next year.

And I know absolutely no one who is going to Rose next year. Almost no one in my class has even heard of Rose. It's actually a neat feeling...I feel like a sort of pioneer. But explaining about Rose to other people gets a little monotonous, since EVERYone seems to want information about colleges they've never heard of...maybe I should put a sign on my forehead.

Oh, and by the way...I saw that you like SciFi TV shows. I'm not a connoisseur, but I do like a few of them...what do you think of the new Dr. Who? The BBC has come out with some quality stuff recently, and I quite enjoy the mix of humor, action, and sentiment that Dr. Who brings to the table.

Good luck with finishing out the year, and keep us updated on how the waiting goes.

I haven't actually seen much of Dr. Who, sadly. What I have seen, I've liked, though. If I had to pick a series to recommend right now, it'd have to be Firefly. It was only on the air for half a season, but it's absolutely amazing. The basic idea is kind of a western in space, which works surprisingly well. It just keeps getting better, and then it ends.

I'll definitely try to keep you informed of what's going on with the waitlist and everything.

I'll leave you with one closing thought: Math!

Hey,

Another incoming frosh here. My stats aren't as impressive as either of you two's, but here they are:

1410 SAT, 32 ACT
3.8 GPA
17 y/o male from northern Kentucky
Probably majoring in Software Engineering

Outside of school, I'm into video games, sports, and history TV shows (I live off the History Channel and ESPN). I'm not really into Sci-Fi stuff with the exception of Stargate SG-1. I'm looking forward to next year, though it'll be weird not knowing anyone (everyone I know and their mom is going to Kentucky or Louisville heh). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else applied for the Fast Track Calculus program?

I was considering FTC but soon realized that it would be a waste of an AP exam credit, for I'm taking the BC calc exam next week, and I'm relatively confident I'll score a 4 or above.

However, I did look into it before this year started, and it looks like a REALLY cool program. I've heard quite positive accounts from many people about it...only thing you need to know is that you work your TAIL off for those five weeks. But it sounds like it's worth it.

FYI - I am a prof at Rose-Hulman and Director of Software Engineering there. I will be running laptop orientation (including at FTC, superhuman!) and will also be a freshman advisor. Contact info for me is under my public profile; I am on AIM (as "Donald Bagert") a lot - please feel free to msg me!

Take care,

Don
