Class of 2013: How much are YOU required to earn this summer?

For the Class of 2013, how much does the college you're going to expect you to save from working this summer for your student contribution?

For me, Swarthmore says 1450, Duke says 1900, and Dartmouth says 2700. I guess I need to take 3 jobs for Dartmouth lol. What givesss? j/k

What about you guys?

Mine doesn’t expect anything from the summer? (I didn’t even know they could expect that… lol)

But I have $3,000 in WS when school begins. Blech!

lucky! what school is that?

Michigan State University.

Best get to working on that summer work :P.
Seriously 2700 in summer work? That’s rough.

yeppp…trippin. i might have to take out a loan if i dont earn it all.

"First, the Student Contribution:

We expect that all students will contribute to the cost of their education. Every student receiving financial aid is asked to earn $2,700 for school in the summer before matriculation. You should also budget 20% of your own savings and assets as a resource for each academic year."

Eek, I am working three jobs this summer, the only ones I could find, and I do not think I’ll be making that much.
The economy’s bad, they can’t possibly expect everyone to find jobs. It’s really hard, especially where I am from.

wow you’re right… the economy. woy woy.

Minimum age goes up to $7.35 this summer. YES. Riches, here I come!

riches. haha.

Tufts doesn’t expect anything of me this summer but I do have $2000 of WS if I matriculate.

$2765…
well, $2700 + 20% student assets…
oh, look, someone else from Dartmouth already posted.

is that high? i mean, if you work one full-time job for the whole summer, you can earn $2700 depending on your area. Min. wage here is 7.50

You guys minimum wages are in the $7.35 & $7.50? Wow, I guess I love living in Washington, I think ours is $8.55 or something

^ higher cost of living…i dont know what minimum wage is in CA though

wow i didnt know students were expected to earn money in the summer…that’s rough.

try to look into tutoring ventures if you can, guys. i find it extremely profitable for the amount of time invested. good luck to you all :)

Yeah, I didn’t know that some places require this either.
That’s going to SUCK.
What happens if you don’t make that much?

Well, summer earnings go towards indirect expenses here… as long as you’re somewhat frugal, it wouldn’t really matter if you came short by a couple hundred dollars. Plus, you can just work more during the year (non-WS, most likely) and earn what you couldn’t make during the summer. Most employment expectations arelike 10hrs a week… it’s not unreasonable for someone to do 15-18 and still have a social life/do well academically.

I’m not too worried, although I’m a bit jealous of you guys who have to earn <2K :)

Ours is going up to $7.35, but it was $6.55 and was only $6.15 about a year ago.

I’m sorry. Haha. Where are you from?

Ours is like 6.55 or something, I think (MD). But if I get the job I want, at a clothing/retail store, I’ll be making like $8/hr.

How do we know how much we’re supposed to earn?

On Long Island, NY – it is $7.00 flat. But, this summer, I have a paid internship that is paying like somewhere between $8-10 per hour, so good deal =)

$2400 from job

$656 from savings…

my parents will cover it
