wow metalforever, engineering with sub-600 math subject tests, what do you think got you in?

To Carnegie Mellon? well i was thinking.

* Reason #1*
It could have been the essay.
I own a paranormal website. I talked about it in response to this essay question:

“Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.”

My essay was titled: “The Challenges and Rewards of Owning a Parapsychological Community”. First, I talked about all of the hardships I face when attempting to do what I love (paranormal -type stuff), and how i feel it is sad that I am unable to express this love and my accomplishments within it without the fear of disapproval. Second, I talked about my parents immediate disapproval of the subject, about how I was never able to tell them with a straight face about my website, and what I learned from such a situation. Third, I talk about the challenges of running such a website, reviewing articles, and evaluating volunteers who might not be the most sane. I told them why my experiences would be beneficial to an education at Carnegie Mellon. I close it out telling them how people have differing interests, and mine truly changed my life.

*Reason #2: * I had an interview. I was upfront regarding my low test scores. She mentioned retaking them, and i did, raising my writing from a 550 to a 590, and my sat physics to a 550 from a 520 (ish).

Also, I had a really good answer for about how i made my decision regarding college choices, and had many questions prepared. One question i asked was what the interviewer (i was at the campus, and was talking to an actual adcom) DIDNT like about the campus. She was pretty surprised and mentioned the parking.

Furthermore, she had asked me to possibly submit an “activities resume” to the school.

* Reason #3: * I submitted an freestyled “activities resume” filled with 10(ish) activites i enjoy. I didnt put down any school related ECs. I related the things I love doing to activities around the community. One example would be loving to sew, with a picture of the punk-studded leather jacket with a bunch of punk/metal bands that I handcrafted. I related my love for sewing to volunteering at a church that sews things to give to needy children or pregnant teens.

Erm, apparently they saw something in me enough to accept me. Im glad, because the school is wonderful (not talking about ranking), everyone i met there was incredibly nice, and it was an arty place with an actual small, green campus near a large city.

Got into Pitt on Friday. Pretty psyched, not my top choice, but I feel much more relaxed knowing I’ve gotten in somewhere. Anyone know Pitt’s mean acceptance GPA? It was a bit of a last minute application for me and I’m unsure if it was surprising that I got accepted or if it was within my range.

metalforever, i’m glad you got in:)
