Class of 2014 Official RD Decisions Thread

<p>Decision: WAITLISTED (■■■)
[ b]Stats:[ /b][ list]
[ *] SAT I: 2090
[ *] SAT IIs: 770 US History/710 Bio E
[ *] ACT: 32 (ugh)
[ *] GPA: 4.591
[ *] Rank: No rank (competitive public; people with low top 10% rankings have decent HYPSM chances; low top 10%).
[ *] Other stats:
[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]: golf captain, MVP, Key club #5 position, 300 service hours, science club, MUN, aca deca, IDK the usual nerd stuff.
[ *] Essays: VERY VERY good. english is a strong subject of mine.
[ *] Teacher Recs: One was pretty good. One was like top 5 students in 30 years good (I think)
[ *] Counselor Rec: She writes like 200 so IDK but I think pretty decent.
[ *] Hook (if any): Im a white kid from a competitive rich HS in so cal…oh wait none LOL
[ /list][ b]Location/Person:[ /b][ list]
[ *] State or Country:CA
[ *] School Type: competitive public. sends pretty many kids to ivies. (though this year has been tough).
[ *] Ethnicity: white+little hispanic (but I didn’t put that on the app.)
[ *] Gender: male
[ *] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: essays, teacher recs, key club leadership, golf, stronger courseload every year.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Complete lack of interest. I didn’t visit, go on a summer program, attend the adcom presentation at my school. I even told them I was going to apply for scholarships and didn’t cause I was too lazy to write the essays. I also applied for aid and my zip code is very wealthy+Im white and wash u isn’t need blind.
[ /list][ b]Other Factors: I probably couldn’t go anyways if I got in. Wash U is very expensive and most people where I live don’t get good aid because of the wealthy zip code.
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: My first wait-list (ugh) At least its not one of my top choices. The interest factor def killed me. Another person from my HS got in with a lower GPA, SAT scores, A “C”, probably worse ECs, but she showed interest. Me and another top student (better than me) were given the slow rejection. So far I’ve gotten into UCSD (likely), BC, Santa Clara, UCI (honors). the rest are more reaches.</p>

<p>[ b]Objective:[ /b][ list]

[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9

[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist
[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Boy scouts (not eagle), Quiz Bowl, Model UN, a few other pointless things
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Student Researcher
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: 400+ hours at science museum
[ *] Essays: Anecdote about my rock climbing hobby, universal acclaim
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: One was good, the other liked me as a person but disliked me as a student cause I was super lazy. I think she said that she lied about all that stuff though
[ *] Counselor Rec: This is her first year, so I dunno
[ *] Additional Rec: I can’t remember if I got my boss in the lab to write one for here. I don’t think so though, cause it was last second
[ *] Interview: Didn’t know there were any
[ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
[ *] Intended Major: I accidentally applied for some dual major program, haha. Something involving engineering and the arts and science school.
[ *] Country (if international applicant): N/a
[ *] School Type: Magnet
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: 200k+ yearly
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Legacy
[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: Scores, grades, essays
[ *] Weaknesses: My extracurriculars. I’m too damn lazy to do stuff that doesn’t interest me just to get into a better college.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Test Scores + Grades + essay + legacy
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] Why aren’t all these text things working?</p>

[</em>] ACT: n/a
[<em>] SAT II (if submitted): 680 USH, 650 Lit
[</em>] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): No idea. My school only calculates weighted. High. Definitely 3.8+, if not higher.
[<em>] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Again, no idea. Definitely <25%, likely not <10% (That’s three and a half people at my school.)
[</em>] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), Calculus B/C (4). In Studio Art and English.
[<em>] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[</em>] Senior Year Course Load: English (one and a half semesters), Art AP, Book Arts, Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir, AIP Project (an arts project second semester), History/Senior Seminar.

[<em>] Job/Work Experience: None. :frowning:
[</em>] Volunteer/Community service: Tanzania, building a school.
[<em>] Essays: It was about my broken finger and how it taught me to loosen up (art), and yet follow the rules (math, the first thing on my cast was “Always take the derivative first!”). Haha. It wasn’t my best, but I think it was okay.
[</em>] Teacher Recommendation: No idea how they were, but they all liked me and I worked super hard in their classes, so I’m sure they were fine.
[<em>] Counselor Rec: I don’t know her all that well, but she’s probably good at writing them.
[</em>] Additional Rec: I had my USH teacher, Art teacher, and a Precollege teacher. I think they all sent them to WUSTL, but I’m not positive.
[<em>] Interview: None.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[</em>] Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
[<em>] Intended Major: Communication design. (People who are reading this should keep that in mind; my stats aren’t amazing but I also applied with a portfolio, which probably helps.) Also accepted ArtSci with no major in mind, just wanting to double major.

[<em>] Country (if international applicant): n/a
[</em>] School Type: Private
[<em>] Ethnicity: White.
[</em>] Gender: Female.

[</em>] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[<em>] Volunteer/Community service: Project C.U.R.E, Bridge Project, Word Play - all really localized jobs.
[</em>] Essays: I loved it personally, but obviously it’s hard to find fault with one’s own essay. My English teachers loved it.
[<em>] Teacher Recommendation: Both great. I went in to talk to them constantly throughout my junior year because they were both such fascinating people.
[</em>] Counselor Rec: Okay. I’ve had a different counselor for all 4 years of high school, so she had barely known me for 3 months before she was writing my letter.

[<em>] Strengths: Essay, Test Scores, Recs
[</em>] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, Abysmal Junior Year GPA
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: 2nd semester junior year grades, without question. There were extenuating circumstances, but I think it would be hard to overcome it anyways. And my counselor rec probably could have been stronger. [/li][/ul]</p>

Stay organized and also make sure you have a clear idea of what the schools are looking for. If your time and money are going to be invested in completing these apps, you might as well make it the best damn application you can. Also once you send in your applications stop worrying and focus on the other things in your life. Being paranoid and worrisome will not affect your decision. You will know your decision in time, no use in fretting over it. **</p>

[/li][/ul]General Comments: i was so elated that i made it in… even my dad was really surprised, considering my grades aren’t as up-to-par as many of the other acceptees.</p>
