***Class of 2017 NMSF/NMF Qualifying Scores

Unfortunately, yes, @UMath101. A 221 in DC, NJ, MA, Internationals and New England boarding schools does not cut it for semifinalist and is only commended.

Hi
I am a U.S citizen, international student though (studying outside the country), my NMSC index is 228, do you know when I the international students will hear about the selection and what is the cut off for them.
Thanks

@whyscreenname contact your GC you should hear today at the latest if you can’t get any info from your GC contact National Merit directly and make sure they have you listed as a U.S. citizen.

@whyscreenname contgrats on your score! Your school guidance counselor or principal certainly should have the information by now.

I was told that students score is irrespective of his or her school ; home schooled, boarding school, private school or public school from the state.

@prepschoolplease boarding schools have different cut off than the state cut off and there are different cut off for boarding schools in different regions.

Some boarding schools go by state if the student body is predominately from that state. There are some states that have public boarding schools for state residents.

Are the boarding school cutoffs out yet?

The New England boarding school cutoff is the same as NJ/DC/MA. 222. This has been confirmed… not sure what the cutoff is for the other regions. If you call NMS they will tell you, though.

^^ The Midwest region should be 219 due to IL and MN.

Hi everyone!

I just took the 2016 PSAT and my compostiste is 1440 and SI is 214.

Math: 750 (woohoo)
EBRW: 690 (lmao)

The cutoff for SF last year was 213 for my state. What do you think my chances are for getting SF this year?

@chelseag89 Your SI is 213 and the cutoff is 213, so you should become a semifinalist as long as the cutoff doesn’t change.

@TP2000 My SI is 214 and the cutoff for last year was 213. There’s usually a small increase or decrease in SI cutoff each year for each state, so I am just afraid that there will be a small increase and I am off by just a few points haha

@chelseag89 Your SI is only 213.
You got a 750 on math, which equates to 37.5/38.
37.52=75
You got a 690 on ERBW, which equates to 69/76
69
2=138

138+75=213

My scores were also exactly the same as yours except I got 740 in math. My index is 212, so the extra 10 in math will give you 1 more SI point, thus 213. I’m not trying to bum you out with this info, but you would find out at some point anyway.

If your state is 213, then it is quite possible that you will get the scholarship in September. The cutoff will likely not change by more than one point in either direction, so it is likely that you will become semifinalist unless your state had an unusually good year for PSAT scores.

Best advice I can give you is be patient. It’s a long ride being on the bubble. Hopefully next year will be more stable than this year as the first year of the new test. Be hopeful but not so overconfident that you set yourself up for extreme disappointment.

If there isn’t a thread for this year, I’m sure it will be made soon.

@chelseag89 the thread for the Class of 2018 is at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/1941884-nms-cutoff-predictions-for-class-of-2018.html#latest

Good luck!

My D is a junior in ND and got an index of 215. She has already taken the ACT and did not intend on taking the SAT but it looks like she stands a good chance of being SF and possibly NMF. Wondering what is the minimum SAT score she would need ?

I think you’re in the wrong thread. Your junior would be class of 2018, not class of 2017.
