The SI is weighted towards English, but you should be safe. Even if your son received a perfect 800 in math, the SI would be 216, and the commendation score this year is lower.
I forgot about this thread!! I’d also agree that if my D had a confirming SI of under 211, I’d have had her signed-up for (or have already taken) another SAT just to be safe - $46 bucks extra for me or not.
We already knew that she’d make NMSF based on her PSAT SI, but she came home genuinely excited to tell me that they made the big NMSF announcement in school today. A lot of these kids kind of rely on us parents to make sure the extraneous details (like that confirming SI) are covered and they don’t really think about that stuff.
I’d hate for her to have done all of this work & then miss out on the final NMF piece because of an SI that didn’t qualify.
@collegework - for the 1480, I believe the lowest possible SI for that score would be a 216 & the highest possible SI would be a 228. So, either way, your son is safe for the confirming SI.
Crickets at school yesterday, but then our local paper ran the press release in the evening, lol. They used a “stock photo.” Nothing at school again this morning so S went by the Principal’s office to ask for his letter, but the Principal wasn’t available.
@collegework, don’t bother looking for the SI in the SAT score report on the College Board website…it isn’t there. The SI is only included in the PSAT score report.
D17 was brought to the GC’s office this morning and notified she’s a NMSF. We knew it was coming, but still a relief. It really changes our game plan for college admissions.
Is this thread going to become our go to place for the rest of the journey to NMF? Or is there another thread that I’m not aware of?
@LMHS73
I wonder if this one is more appropriate:
Thanks for that @DavidPuddy, I’d forgotten to bookmark that thread. Seems like this one has pretty much served its purpose so I’ll probably hang out in the other one from now on.
@DavidPuddy - THANK YOU !!
Is the finalist confirming cutoff by state or nation wide? My child’s confirming SAT is a 217.Our state semi-finalist number is 223. Just want to make sure he’s in the clear on the confirming SAT.
The SAT confirming score is a nationwide figure. It will be at, or maybe slightly below, the 211 national commended score cutoff. Your child’s score of 217 is high enough to check that requirement off the list of things to do to move forward to NM Finalist status.
Update: NE boarding school region is 223. My son did not qualify with a 222.
Is there a counselor portion to the National Merit Finalist Application? If there is, where do I find it?
If you’re not a homeschool parent you can’t see the counselor portion.
I’m an applicant (not homeschooled), so I not need to do anything about the counselor part?
No, your GC should already have the information they need to complete their part.
Oh friends, my 35 ACT, NMSF (SI=221) kid got back her confirming score for her first SAT and something went way wrong. SI = 210 We were SHOCKED bc she felt the test was very easy. Either she was tricked or there was a bubbling or scoring issue. Nevertheless, does this mean she needs to have another go at it on Nov 5th? (Sigh) The timing is terrible bc of all of the application deadlines. Moreover, she has no way of knowing where she went wrong in time to correct those errors next time. #-o
That is shocking. If this were us here is what my daughter would do:
-
Contact NMSC and ask if 210 is sufficient. If they hesitate at all, prepare to retake. (Parent can actually place this call - they will confirm you are an authorized person to discuss your daughter’s application).
-
double check the instructions to make sure that Dec. 2nd test date still good. Usually you are allowed to submit test scores for a two year window up to Dec. of the current year.
-
When registering, arrange to have that score sent directly to NMSC so there is no down time. Also, send in the 210. But confirm with them first that they will accept the highest as the confirming score.
-
Order the test analysis or score analysis or whatever it’s called from College Boar pronto so she can see what happened.
While late reg. for the 11/4 date isn’t till 10/25, she proabbly has nothing to lose by taking the extra month and figuring out how to improve her score. Hopefully it was a bubbling thing or - rare but possible - a mistake on their part.
BTW, which SAT date did she sit that test?
Also - perspective is very important. They are still messing with the scaling of this test. It’s actually possible that EVERYONE scored low on that particular administration. It’s a bummer because NMSC goes off actual SI for a particular test result and not percentile. That’s why retaking can be a good idea. Makes you wish NMSC accepted “superscores”!
@JBStillFlying , she sat for the Oct 7th test and scores were released today. I called NMSC and got a very confusing answer. Rep would not confirm that 210 would be okay, but said that it would be “below 211.” She said it was 206 last year for a 209 Commended cutoff, but that they don’t have enough data to narrow down a number for this year yet. She said the only guarantee is with a 211.
I also called CB and they offered a rescore but said it would take five weeks. I ordered the score report but that takes 8–10 weeks. Neither option helps.
Moreover, I had already sent the scores to NMSC with a free score send assuming D18 had easily scored high enough (based on her elation after the test at how easy it was compared to the ACT). Can I get that score send cancelled?
I do believe we have the Nov and Dec SAT administrations to qualify. I was just hoping they wouldn’t be needed.
