I got deferred from Penn Rishav!

Duke University - Lincoln School (1)

Hey guys! I am from Nepal and got in my ED II College where my family contribution is 8.5 K/year including health insurance and books too. On top of that I have 3500 K/year loan and 2k work/study. I was hoping they would give me more aid but they said they don’t negotiate. Now I am considering maybe declining this offer and waiting for RD results. I am not sure if this is a smart decision, incase I don’t get a better deal :open_mouth: So in general, is this a good deal or not? Is this kinda like what most Nepalese students get? Ugh I dont know what to do :open_mouth:

Which college is it?
How much are you willing to pay, and how much did you say your financial contribution was in your financial aid application? You need to pay 10.5k per year excluding loan, and the college fee increases by roughly 4% every year. First you need to be sure that your aid will also increase every year. If you are saying that your college didn’t provide enough aid as you had asked then I think that your aid won’t increase every year.((But you need to be sure about that first))
If it is a matter of only 2-3k a year and you are not sure of acceptance in other college OR you don’t think that your safety won’t provide enough aid then you could take it. MOST IMPORTANT THING IS, be sure that you will be able to afford before making any decisions.

@lesgo, count your blessings. You have got a good deal already there, grab it.

Its Mount Holyoke! I said I would pay 6k in total…and as for tuition increase, they said that family contribution remains the same but either my loan or scholarship increases so that’s not too much of a worry…Yeah that’s the dubhida…what if I dont get a better deal in RD or don’t even get accepted? :open_mouth: Do a good number of people from Nepal get accepted to good colleges (Lafayette, wellesley, Colgate etc) in RD ?? Or do they normally use most of their funds for ED applicants? And do u guys know how much you can generally save during summer (after paying rent/food) if you work full time in summer?? Thanks!

lesgo I was in a similar situation for my ED1.Why don’t you ask somebody who is currently in MHC.You won’t have problems with the loans as they should be paid only after graduation. As far as I know Lafayette selects 2/3/4 applicants every year from Nepal. You could have a shot there.

Wellesley almost always takes students in RD, so who knows!

Whoever was accepted to Rollins: is it affordable? (I’m 100% sure Alfond scholarships have not gone out yet, even though finalist selection is done by 1st Feb.) I really do not think it is a good idea to post unaffordable offers as future applicants will look at this thread. This also applies to Villanova (offers are only made in RD round) and UNC Chapel Hill (did the person get merit aid?)

The person accepted to Rollins is going to attend the college… So I guess it’s affordable … :-?

How do we international students generally receive college decision notifications? FedEx? Air mail? Email?

All the colleges that I’ve applied notify international students about the admission decision via email. Apart from email, you’ll receive a packet via air mail too in most of the cases. I’ve recently found out that some colleges that receive a lot of international applications don’t bother sending a packet via air mail if you’re rejected. But if you’re accepted you’ll surely receive a think one.
