Class of 2019 National Merit Worry Thread

Thanks @mountainmomof3. I’ve been stalking his blog regularly, but hadn’t seen that update yet.
Based on last year’s results threads, it looks like the earliest we (not me specifically) might hear something is Monday or Tuesday. Bulk (“Standard”) mail delivery window says delivery to our area might take until a week from today.

So here is a question for y’all while we wait: How does NMF work for a student who wants to apply to dental hygiene/nursing/dental school after they get their first 60 hours of prerequisites completed? For example, if a student goes to Texas A&M as a NMF and then applies and gets in/goes to their Health Science school in Dallas to complete a BS in dental hygiene/nursing/pre-dental,etc., would the scholarship money still apply? It seems like it would since it is still Texas A&M but it is a different campus location (1st two years-College Station; 2nd two years-Dallas)

Possibly, if its the same school, likely? Good question. IMHO. My experience with 2018. You notify a school that they are the students pick. That school honors their NMF scholarship if there is one. If the student is a Scholar, NM sends the $2500 Scholarship to that school for the student. If they are a Finalist, the school issues the $ Award to the student. Each school has their own scholarship or none. The University is trying to attract the NMF’s. Once they are done, they are done. UA was offering a 6 year BS and MS or Law to the 2018 class. Florida Benacquisto is the game changer for the 2019 class.

Some one on Arts sight posted that semifinalists are posting? Anyone know where?

I think maybe reddit but if you read those threads it doesn’t seem clear that people were officially notified yet. Unless more have posted…

I don’t see anything on Reddit that looks legit. Just one comment about Ohio.

Someone want to copy the info from the first post of “Class of 2018 NMSF Qualifying Scores” change the commended score and start the thread for Class of 2019 NMSF Qualifying Score. That way it’s ready for next week!

<=221 is good in Texas from a homeschool principal!!!

@gigem87 is that the same as last year?

@homerdog yes and is right at Art’s prediction. If the info. is solid it won’t go higher than that.

Unsure. That principal only had one student with a SI of 221. So the Texas cutoff will be 221 or lower.

The info. was just added to the comments on Art’s blog.

I started the qualifying scores thread for this year.

Good luck to everyone!!

Recent comment on Art’s blog: “Cliff, There will definitely be a number of states that will go down a point this year, so I don’t think hope is lost.”

He might know something. That’s more definitive wording than he’s used in the past. Just speculation while everyone waits. :-??

So how do they determine the NMFs (once the NMSF s are announced)? Is it more holistic with an essay and letters of recommendation or do they go by more score cutoffs?

You need to submit an SAT “confirming score” (usually anything that results in an SI at the commended will be fine), and you submit an application and write an essay. Your principal writes a rec. letter and your counselors submit transcripts etc. All that will be clear in the instructions and will be accessible via a special portal.

Edit/update: About 15,000 of the 16,000 SF’s move on to NMF. Those who don’t are pretty much aware of that risk beforehand (C’s, or snarky essay, or failure to complete the application at all, etc.)

According to a comment on Art’s blog, 216 in Oklahoma made it.

No dog in this race, but cheering for everyone! And SOOOOO relieved Texas is 221 or lower. D takes the PSAT 2019 for NMF.

Thanks everyone, holding our breath until least 3 SI confirmation numbers!

My daughter just texted me that her principal gave her THE letter today! She is official! Texas 223
