Thread for NMSF Chances, Questions about New Scoring, or other related New PSAT questions....

Instead of each person making a new thread asking: I got a XXX, will I make NMSF? Please put your questions and concerns here.

I received a 1430 and my selection index is 215. Would that qualify me for NMSF in NY?

1450, SI 217, from MD but go to BS in CT.

BS students typically have the highest cut-off. Does anyone have an estimate of what the highest cut-off will be?

@Ponder2Leap NY’s cut-off is usually lower than Calif’s isn’t it? If so, then I believe that it’s been estimated that a 215 would be high enough for Calif.

Hopefully, someone who’s done the math will chime in.

A 215 in MY would make NMSF according to the blog at this link: http://blog.prepscholar.com/national-merit-scholarship-cutoff-2015-2016 Boarding schools usually have the top cutoff scores in the country. Using DC, MA & NJ as a guide, the BS cutoff will probably be around 212-214. If so, your 217 would make you a NMSF.

To totally confuse the matter, there is another blog out there with very different cutoff estimates, based on concordance tables released by The College Board. The author’s revised estimates are closer to last year’s cutoffs. Read their findings at http://collegeadmissions.testmasters.com/update-psat-scores-cut-national-merit-2016/

Personally, I don’t know which method is best to use as an estimation tool. The sliding scale method makes more sense to me, but the concordance method could be right, too. I hate to say it, but we won’t know for sure until Sept.

I don’t know that anyone really has any idea. Some people swear by the concordance. Others swear its completely wrong. Some swear by SI table in the CB reports. Others say its inflated baloney. Talk to one person and they swear cutoffs will go down. Talk to another and they’ll all be around 220. It’s enough to make a mama’s head explode. For now, I’m just assuming the son’s 1430/216 (FL) is on the bubble and could go either way. But my pocketbook really, really would like it to the right was for either Florida Incentive of UA…
