Wait if we got into letters and sciences for spring admission, can we change to our major of choice in the spring as well?
@moon1light9path7 I’m sorry to hear that! Honestly i wish there was a way to give up my spot directly to you. And I had a 2150 SAT and 4.09 GPA
You have to meet the gateways for the business school and then apply for it. You can’t just declare the major. You’ll need to most likely get above a 3.5 GPA at UMD and do very well in the specific gateway courses. Since you’re letters and sciences you go in as undeclared. Engineering is different. If you pass the gateways with the required grades (no easy feat), you automatically get into the engineering program. As far as Freshman Connection, nobody will know you’re in it. It’s a way to start and finish on time instead of waiting to start spring semester. If you get housing in the dorms, nobody will know you are in FC. If you don’t, you’ll be on a FC floor in the View or Varsity, both on the east side of campus (and VERY close to computer science, etc).
@AIBICIDIEI Technically I believe that is similar to Liberal Arts but I believe with a solid Freshman year GPA and a good advisor it is always possible to get into (Smith) the business school also you can browse some of the past year posts for any info…Good Luck and congrats
@AIBICIDIE…Generally you are put in as Letters and Sciences if you applied for a Limited Enrollment Program (Business, Psych, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Criminal Justice, and a few others) and didn’t get in. Otherwise, if you apply for a major that’s not a LEP, you’ll go right to that major. You’ll work with your advisor to enroll in regular freshman Gen Eds as well as the gateways for the major you want. Eventually at the right time (usually second semester freshman year) you apply for that LEP, assuming you passed the gateways with the requirements. This is super common, so don’t sweat it. The only bummer is that Smith is very competitive, so you need to have an A average to have a decent shot, and really crush your gateway classes.
what are gateways? is this an exam? or are gateways classes you need to take
@viking710 thats so sweet of you! good luck at whatever college you attend!
The gateways aren’t exams. They are specific courses and you’ll see what they are with your advisor. The entrance to those programs depends on the grades you get in the gateway courses, your overall GPA, and potentially other things. They will help you with that. Again, Smith business programs are a bit tough to get into because you aren’t assured admittance, although if you get certain grades you can feel pretty confident. Engineering on the other hand is cut and dried: you hit the required grades in the gateway classes and you are guaranteed into the program.
What are the required grades for engineering? Cause I didn’t get into the school of engineering.
@Juggerz what were your stats? I got into the school of engineering and honestly i was surprised. I did not do well on SAT and my goa is a 3.89. SAT was 1750 /2400 (superscore)
My sat was a 2120 (700 math, 710 cr, 710 writing) and a 4.2 weighted GPA
Idk, for some reason I got pretty unlucky with college decisions
Do I have to take English and the social studies class if I got a 4 on the ap exam for both those subjects?
@Juggerz Google umd ap credit and it should be second link
I didn’t get any decision as of yet…
How did you all check your decision? Where was it posted? My portal hasn’t changed a bit…which means no decision yet.
@Aintnoabc I am the same as you. No change in my portal as of yet…
I’m the same as others, no change yet. Granted, I’m a transfer application. I would assume they come out alongside regular decisions since it’s virtually the same application with a March 1st deadline(Although I submitted back in December). I’m really hoping, since I’m not putting a deposit at my current college as I really don’t want to stay.
UMD Transfer…Nope. These come out April 15th, so do not worry. You will not see a change until close to that date, or that date. My son who currently attends got his decision last year on April 16th along with the other transfer applicants who met the priority deadline of 3/1 with all of their materials. The admissions section of the site says something like “beginning mid-April”. They are true to their word. So once again, don’t worry. Your decision isn’t yet.
