Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Colleges that you may want to check out as you come back from OCU (you mentioned that you were driving back) In Illinois: Depaul/Northwestern/Roosevelt CCP, In Indiana: Ball State/ IU, In Ohio: CCM/Otterbein/Baldwin Wallace, In Pennsylvania: Carnegie Mellon/Point Park, Penn State, In Upstate New York: Ithaca/Syracuse, In NYC: NYU/Pace/Fordham. Obviously this is a LOT of schools- no idea on your planned route home. But all of these are respected programs and interesting/cool schools…just a place to get started!!!

A couple notes on vvnstar’s post: both UT Austin and SMU now have MT programs. SMU is an auditioned MT minor for Acting, VP, and Dance majors - very interesting given the quality of their fine arts department. It is a fairly long drive from OKC to Austin and San Marcos, 6-7 hours, more if you hit traffic or stop to eat. Texas State and Oklahoma have prescreens as part of their process and are among the most highly selective programs.

@toowonderful and @EmsDad‌ and @vvnstar‌ thank you so much for the responses! So much to think about! BA versus BFA. I don’t know what my son will be looking for after the summer program but this will open his eyes. @KaMaMom‌ Both of us have read the “I Got In” book, but I’ll check out the other one as well now that we will be following through. (Well, if he feels the same way after the fifth week that he did after the first week.)

tmygirl and RockBandMom - Very similar story for my son. I did the mad scramble December of his Junior year when he said MT was his future major. The story is in the 2018 sharing thread and Final Decisions so I won’t take up space here to repeat, but I wanted you to know you will figure this out and it will be one exciting ride!!! :)

Thank you everyone for your support!!!

Well, after 3+ years of reading and posting on CC, the process starts for D tomorrow as she catches a 6:05am flight (yawn!) to Nebraska for the International Thespian Festival to audition and talk to college reps. This year they have 53 schools attending for auditions. The MT school list includes CCM, Webster, Otterbein, Roosevelt, Hartt, UArts, Northern Co, Viterbo, Illinois Wesleyan, Nebraska Wesleyan, Ohio Northern, Columbia, Drake, CAP21/Molloy, and TCU (and Montclair is exhibiting). On the acting side, the list includes DePaul and Minn/Guthrie. While these are basically prescreens and not full-fledged auditions for most programs, it will be very helpful to see which schools give d a callback and what she thinks after meeting the reps in the callback room and at their exhibitor tables. Some schools do give out verbal acceptances at the auditions.

It will certainly be a good experience for her after spending two six-week sessions this year preparing for college auditions at her school. Walking out into a room full of college reps will be an interesting challenge, although her school did hold mock auditions with a panel of college reps and pros and a room full of her peers and parents.

I know at the very least, she will have a blast traveling and attending the conference with her senior theatre class (after 3 years together for 3 hours every day in conservatory-style theatre studio/classes/production they are all very close). Her school takes all the senior theatre majors who are going to college for theatre, and this year it is a record 90 percent of her theatre cadre - normally it is more like 60 percent.

Best of luck @EmsDad’s D. BAL! And report back :)

She’ll have a ball, emsdad! Too bad there isn’t a Truman High mainstage this year. They produce theatre like no other U.S. high school program.

Wow, @EmsDad! This is why I’m like… this is CRAZY starting this late. Good luck to her, I’m sure she will be prepared, but reading some of these threads, sometimes you really don’t know what they think. @Entertainersmom, I’ll be checking out that thread!

Break a leg @EmsDad’s D! I have no doubt she will be amazing. You all have prepared well for this journey. Now it’s time to enjoy the process. Best wishes!

I’m going to the three week OCU Program this Saturday with the same idea of making sure I really want to do this! And I’m also going on a college program road trip thing too! Great minds think alike I guess

Go @emsdad’s daughter. You have been contributing like a veteran in this forum for so long it feels very strange to think this is actually your first actual “at bat.” Fun!

@jewel15 - our D went to the OCU camp a few years ago and just finished her freshman year there for college. If you have any questions about OCU, I’m glad to try and answer them. Their camp was one of the best experiences for our D. You are in for some great training, life-long friends and so much fun! Enjoy!!

@vvnstar‌ - thanks! Does your daughter like the voice faculty there? Because there is an option to do voice lessons, but it’s a little bit more. Do you think it’s worth it? I’m so excited!

Just had to share – my D flew by herself from California to Michigan to go to Interlochen for a second year. Then, on to a week at Baldwin Wallace for the Musical Theatre Overtures program. So excited for her! Anxious to get going on the college applications and prescreens when she gets home. We did get her Elon prescreen in before she left, though. Can’t believe this crazy year is starting!!! Can’t wait to share the ups and downs with this great group.

Wow @Divamamacita! Impressed you guys are at prescreen stage already. I am grateful for the summer to nail those down…

@jewel15, maybe you can tell me about the program then, because my son doesn’t talk to me! (LOL!) Girls are so much better in that department!

Oh, and I signed my son up for the extra voice lessons. I figure while you are there, it makes sense!

@jewel15. D ADORES her voice teacher. Actually one thing we didn’t realize before she got there is she has her main voice teacher with whom she works on technique and also a vocal coach who works more on presentation and rep. She works with both her voice teacher and vocal coach each week. I don’t know which teachers are working the camp. But all of the MT/VP faculty are wonderful. If you look on the OCU website, there are bios for each of the faculty in the MT program. I don’t know the cost for extra lessons, but it might be worthwhile to get feedback on your voice from college faculty since you will be auditioning for many of them soon.

@EmsDad so exciting!! I can’t wait to “watch” her journey!!

I’m excited for this to start for all of you! Remember BREATHE…in and out all day long!!

Regarding voice teachers …

As a non-musical, non-theatrical being … I am BLOWN away what a great voice teacher can accomplish. DD15 had a VERY poor teacher at first - her choir teacher. (She since dropped choir.) DD would sit for all lessons, choir teacher would say she was singing wrong but not give ANY solutions for fixing the problems and told her she would never have big range, would always be an alto, vibrato cannot be developed (you are either born w/ it or you’re not) and my favorite: There Are Worse Things I Could Do is the best song to use for every audition EVER.

In two years, DD15 has grown by leaps & bounds … it’s amazing what maturity and a good voice teacher can accomplish.
