Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Wow^^^…congrats to your son and best wishes for his new plans!

Congratulations dcsparent!! Your head must be spinning. So wonderful your son is where he is meant to be.

Congratulations to your son, dcsparent! And good luck with all the preparations!

Hi all, I am new to posting, although I’ve been researching CC for a while now, as my D is conducting her search (with my overbearing help  for the perfect MT program. She caught the acting bug in middle school and has been in EVERY play/musical throughout high school since. She is also very involved in various choirs. Singing is her most notable strength (mezzo belt) but her acting is strong too. Dance needs work as she has not been involved in dance lessons over the years - just what she learned in musicals. Her goal is to get accepted to a strong (audition) BA MT program that is open to double majors. We are focusing on the East coast, although UCLA seems to allow for the double major so we may investigate. The process is so new to us and seems so complicated. I am so grateful for this site to share experiences and information as we navigate senior year!!

@SJBmab - welcome aboard!

Writing a post I never thought would come from me. Darling D has decided that she is not going to go BFA!!! The first day I was too stunned to think about it but after a few days I can see that this is the best decision she could have made for herself. She has a fantastic new list with one audition-in BA and scholarship audtions at almost every school. She really felt that she needed to broaden her understanding of the world to help inform her art and overall felt that a BFA education was too limiting for her. She will double major. I will miss meeting all of you at Unifieds and will be here to cheer everyone on as they move through this year. Get it class of 2019!!

Going through this process really helps to define what they want from an education. Good for her for finding her path!

@LoveMyMTGirl you could not be more right. I think for her writing the essays really brought things into focus. I am so grateful that she made this discovery now and I am incredibly proud of her. She has been involved in theater/acting for so long that in many ways it would have been so much easier for her to follow that path. She is just coming into her own as a critical thinker and curious intellect. It is an incredible thing to see :)

@evilqueen - everyone should respect “the process”. No wrong paths, except the nagging ones that are ignored. Your D is beginning to trust herself. Congratulations.

@evilqueen better for her to come to that decision now and not AFTER all auditions were over like my cousin’s daughter did. Good for her!

And my daughter LOL

Hi all … I think I’ve posted in this thread before … if not, hi! :)

My life has been crazy this last month getting our first born off to college for the first time … and now I’m jumping in head first for her sister. And absolutely NONE of the college research I did for our oldest applies so I’m starting from scratch.

I remember reading somewhere in this forum that a lot of seniors take a break from high school theater their senior year and tbh, it shocked me. Now, that the school year is here, I totally get it. TOTALLY.

I have a lot of the BFA choices mapped out … but I’m thinking her first audition is going to be Oct 4 for Southern Illinois University. It’s totally driveable, the time frame works and it will be a great way to get her feet wet and hopefully get some feedback before the auditions for her fav schools rolls around.

@KaMaMom - you are VERY wise to do an early audition. You may or may not get direct feedback, but you will at least get the feel of what a BFA audition is like. Do you know if auditioning early for Southern Illinois gets you an answer early, or do you still have to wait. An early acceptance (if it is a school you like) can make the process feel less terrifying.

@toowonderful … That is a question I don’t have an answer to! I will have her email the department and find out!

Is anyone going to attend Carnegie Mellons sleeping bag weekend this year???

I don’t know what the sleeping bag wknd is. We have decided to visit the schools my son gets accepted to. I do have a Carnegie Mellon question tho…looks like they do not have a prescreen…is that correct, or am I missing something?

CMU has no prescreen. They see EVERYONE who applies and pays the audition fee! The sleeping bag weekend was a great weekend to visit. They had two days of activities and information sessions. The students get to stay in the dorm with a host and attend classes the second day. It was really a great experience although we only did one day because I had to get back for work.

Thanks GSOMTMOM!!

Interesting thing about the CMU sleeping bag weekend - my daughter attended I guess six years ago now and hated the attitude of the girls (current students) she was with she withdrew her application. She said she didn’t care if it was the best, she couldn’t see herself living with these kinds of snobs for four years.

^^WOW!
